As I posted in a similar Lounge thread, gas companies buy and sell to each other all the time, making it impossible to know if the fuel you're buying is 'American' or from the mid-east. While the stations listed above may not directly import mid-east oil, they may buy from ELF or another European provider that does (or make backroom trades of supply).

With due respect to Donna, a great asset to the 1st gen forum, the above email she posted is just as valid as the 'driving an SUV supports Terrorism' emails that we've been receiving - and were debunked by most car magazines last month.

Not only are such partial-knowledge emails erroneous, they also support the racist notion that all mid-eastern companies, and therefore there citizens, support terrorism or are terrorists themselves. Yet no one makes the same claim about the Irish, despite decades of white-on-white terrorism. No one makes the same claims against Christians, despite the actions of Tim McVeigh.

Is this old?

Chevron, Texaco, and Shell are all one company. Also, does he mean that they are exporting Middle Eastern oil, and not importing it? And aren't those are American companies? So the oil taken from the Middle East is not part of their GDP, rather, OUR GNP. I could be wrong, but last I checked, this was a marketing ploy by marketing interns at Citgo...

Oh yeah, it cracks me up that you guys say "Shell is better than Chevron, Texaco," vice versa. ChevronTexaco is one company...and they own Shell! It's all the same gas! Oh, and those other companies that "do not import Middle Easter oil", true, they don't, but they sell gas cheaper because they purchase the left over gas from the ChevronTexaco trucks. Didn't anyone take Econ classes?

Haha that reminds me of something on the Daily Show. Jon Stewart was talking about some of the celebrities who are buying hybrid cars, so now they only support terrorism when going up hills

that was interesting

"The DoE tracks oil imports by company each month, and although the raw data are a little hard to follow (fortunately, the DoE also provides an explanation of their symbols), for February 2002 the totals were as follows:

CITGO is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the national oil company of Venezuela, so naturally most of its crude oil comes from there. However, in February 2002 CITGO also imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 1,342,000 barrels
Kuwait: 437,000 barrels

Conoco imports primarily from Mexico, Venezuela, and Canada, and not from Middle Eastern countries. However, they are planning to merge with Phillips, which does import from Middle Eastern countries (see below).

BP imports from a variety of oil-producing countries, but in February 2002 BP North America also imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 470,000 barrels
Kuwait: 415,000 barrels
Saudi Arabia: 2,123,000 barrels
Algeria: 3,853,000 barrels

Phillips also imports from a variety of oil-producing countries, but in February 2002 Phillips imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 717,000 barrels
Saudi Arabia: 1,100,000 barrels

Sinclair imports from Canada, not the Middle East.

Sunoco imports primarily from Canada, Angola, and Nigeria, not Middle Eastern countries.
So, 'doing the math' and multiplying these monthly figures by $30/barrel and projecting them over the course of a year, supporting only the companies listed above would still be putting $3.76 billion dollars per year in the coffers of Middle Eastern countries."
