LSD swap in an 83 GS

Hey guys someone told me that I can get an LSD w/out swapping the rear end out of my 83 GS. I was told to get a third member and bolt it on? If anyone knows what I'm talking about can you please post or PM me the required parts and year theyre from for this swap in an 83 GS.

Thanks, Ed

it has to be from an 81-83. if you go with an 84 then you need to swap axles and other parts i believe. you would also have to grind down the housing too. i am hoping to soon do the same thing. let me know if you get this done soon.

Well, from where I'm from the only way to get an LSD is to bolt one on. I have no idea what that third member is. You should try to get the complete suspension from an 84-85 GSL-SE. That way you'll get bigger brakes in front, rear discs, an LSD, and a more standard bolt pattern which will give you more choices if you want to swap wheels (you'll need at least the stock SE wheels, your 13 inchers won't fit).

I won't bother answering your 2 other threads which is the exact same question.

Sure a GSL-SE front and rear axle swap is the ultimate upgrade but if can set you back a entire weekend and about $500+ with all the parts you would need.

A 3rd member swap is easy to do, unhook rear brakes, and pull the axle shafts loose. Remove the bolts that hold on the 3rd member and swap in the limited slip. I recommend putting new friction disc in the LSD otherwise you are wasting your time.
Seal with RTV and bolt the 3rd member to your drum brake axle. Reinstall axle shafts. Install proper LSD gear oil. Hook up brakes.

BTW the 3rd member should be from the same year car, others will work but that is another topic.

Hey guys how about a how to section on this? I'll search for an 83 GSL third member right away.
The reason why I hose this route you may ask? I want to have the same bolt pattern front and back and retain the drums. My cars been down long enough. Time to put the lsd and DRIVE!

Thanks, Ed
