But tomarow ill have a pre silencer and straight pipe for now.
Anyone else ever do this?

You do it once then never again.

My friend had a rotary truck with just an R5 exhaust manifold. The muffler shop was only a mile away thank goodness. I had to roll the window up because objects on the shoulder of the road (parked cars etc) would reflect the noise, and there was a lot of it! We also passed three cops in the oncoming lane. Not getting pulled over = priceless.

I've also succumbed to the temptation. It's kind of mind blowingly loud, isn't it?

when I first got my Rx7 I lived in a 4 plex and I had the garage in back. When I put on my headers for the first time and started my car, the guy that lived in the back unit nearest the garage came running out and threatened my life if I ever started the car again without an exhaust.

I was pretty amused with both the sound and how pissed off the guy was!

on one of my first gens i had just bought, the cat was completely plugged and the car was darn near undrivable. glowing and hissing red hot and the car would barely do 40mph. just to get it where it needed to go i yanked everything off the car. most ungodly sound i hope to never experience again.

i took the air cleaner lid off the P port, and the guy came down from upstairs holding his head....

i did the muffler shop drive with the 20B, and while it was loud, the cop i drove by didn't pull me over...

20B wasn't that loud, although once the exhaust was hooked up i did try to start it with the engine running...

with the 20B i forgot to zero the TPS before we drove down to LA for sevenstock, and once it got warm it was shooting huge fireballs (i could see flame in the mirror)...

people won't tailgate a car that shoots fire...

Loud in Montana

I too had a run in with an open exhaust rotary. Same scenario. Trying to drive to the muffler shop. I tried to time it so that everyone had gone to work but people with night jobs would not be asleep yet; my guess was right around 10am. It was unbelievably loud. It really is the loudest thing I have ever heard. I wish I had a decibel meter with me because I have worked at natural gas compressor station that run around 130db and I know it was louder in the car. We all say we won't do it again, but we probably will.

I ran mine a few times with stock exhaust manifold and 2 foot of pipe sticking out at 8 pm and a few times early morning 8 am just cause my neighbors are stuck up dicks. I love it. I work nights and it was payback time for all the lawn mowers I had to listen to at 7 am. Ha ha

I've done it a few times. sometimes I was doing the exhaust shop trip and sometimes I did it just for fun.

the time that made me the most uncomfortable was an early morning run to the exhaust shop (it opened at 0700) and it was "just" the open exhaust manifold after a 13B swap. the Bronx ... need I say why I was uncomfortable. I had vacuum leaks (that I could not search for for obvious reasons) so I simple let the engine stall as I approached red lights. whenever I restarted and moved EVERYONE - people at bus stops, cars around me, etc. - looked at me with absolute abhorrence.

the most fun time was when I scared a guy on a motorcycle ... and he had a helmet. that time I was 12A with RE header and one presilencer.

Haha around my work we have a few different lawn care companies with contracts (including my work's) and it gets unbearable to listen to for hours on end - I bet a loud rotary would drown them all out though

I've sat in a 64 Mustang with just straight headers pounding against the firewall but an open rotary makes that seem like a hushed-down 4 banger.

When I was younger I used to unbolt the exhaust at the end of the collected RB header (slip out the gaskets and hang it loosely back on the studs) and go for cruises. The sound was so intense, you could really feel it vibrate the whole car above 4k and near 6k you wanted to cover your ears for fear that they may be bleeding. The best was the reaction from pedestrians up to 6 blocks ahead of me turning around to see what the heck was coming down the street. The longest drive we did was just over 3 hours with me and my buddy wearing big *** earmuffs for protection, other motorists were not impressed with us.

Since then I've only done it once in my driveway mid-install on an exhaust because some friends did not believe just how loud an un-muffled rotary can be. And now that I think about it, a few beers in....it suddenly seems like a good idea to bring it back hahaha

The cat had a hole in it, so I drove my car to a welding shop with open exhaust. A stuck up bitch in a cadillac with a realitor's sign on the door looked at me like I was indigent poor white trash.

I was long a live cattle contract, and it made $400 all the time this was going on.

So who is the poor white trash now lady?

Took my mid pipe off the other day and stared down the dark header hole... I kinda wanted to try firing it up, but decided today was not a good day for eviction.

If you get a chance go watch the peripheral port NA guys running nitro at the drag strips. Open header 12A sounds quiet compared to those guys!

One day on my ride home from work, my muffler popped off on the freeway. Making matters worse the exhaust was pretty much aimed directly at the rear valence area, so all the noise relfected right back into the car.

My new muffler is much more secure- not only clamped but has a screw through it and under the clamp so there's no way it can come loose. Last one was just clamped.
