loose rear wheels?

at the last autox event i went to, they almost failed my '83 GSL for safety inspection 'cause the rear wheels were kinda loose - you could move 'em about an inch or so either way of you push/pulled on 'em hard enough.

any ideas what'd cause this? wheel bearings? suspension? or is this normal on a FB rearend? they seemed to think my lugnuts were loose and about to fall off, but i'd torqued 'em down the day before so that's not the case.

just wanna get an idea before i start lookin' to get an idea of _where_ i should be lookin'.

If you mean axially, that is, in and out along the direction of the axles's axis, you probably were working on your brakes. The retainer bolts for the backing plates hold the axles in. I did a brake conversion and found this out when the axle fell in my lap.
