Question Looks like a nice deal.

Howdy.

Great forums yall have set up here, looks like lots of good info.

Thought I would toss something out to yalll, see what kind of response I get.

I've got a chance at picking up an 81 Rx7 for about a grand.

Guys says it ran fine as his wife's car, but she died in 2000, and it hasn't been driven much since.

Also said that in 97, they had a factory rebuilt motor put in, and it's got 25K miles on that motor.

I'm guessing it's a 12a, but I'm not sure, I'll have to see.

Since I'm in the desert (new mexico), I'm not too worried about rust and stuff, but more worried about the carbueration. I've re-jetted motorcycles and V-cars, but never a rotary.

Will I be getting in over my head with this, and do you guys have any pointers as far as what to look for when I go out to look at the car?

Here's the pic that was with the ad:

I appreciate any help/info yall can throw my way... with any luck, I'll be in here a lot more looking for tuning tips...

Thanks in advance.

Hey,

Welcome to the forum. That seems like a pretty nice car at a pretty good deal.

As far as the carburator goes, I'm not too sure but its been done. You can probably talk to Sterling about that one he rejets these carbs all the time. He also offers poweder coating now too and stuff. Really good guy know's his stuff pretty good. Other options since your new to this, you can look in the For sale section of this forum and there's holley carbs (Mostly Racing beat ones), Mikuni, weber, and some dollereto (I think thats spelled right) for sale at decent prices. But thats another route for the less experienced such as myself. I know that I wasn't much help but I wanted to welcome you to the forum. Hope we'll see you around.

Sam

Looks like a GSL badge on the roof pillar. GSL badge means it should have rear disc brakes and LSD.
The stock carb is pretty well designed, and seldom needs much tinkering.
Factory reman engine with 25K should be good to go for around 175K, with proper maintainence.

Welcome to the forum. Definately a GSL badge so you should have the rear discs and LSD. Price seems reasonable from the info. In the FAQ thread theres some links I believe that might get you started info wise on what to look for. Mainly that theres no white smoke out the exhaust (signs of burning coolant, very bad) etc.

Thanks for the replies.

A buddy of mine said that as long as it starts easy and runs for a while with no smoke after warm-up, it should be ok.

One question tho... LSD? I'm assuming this is not hallucinagenics.

Thanks again.

I wouldn't worry about rejetting the carb, however, with it sitting for so long, you may need to rebuild it.

1k for a rust free GSL, running is a bargain, if the rest of the mechanicals are decent. Once you get it, flush and replace ALL fluids, oil coolant, tranny diff, brakes, clutch and fuel system. When you add fuel to the tank, add a can of Seafoam, that may put off a carb rebuild.

Welcome to the forum, check my sig for links to the FSMs and read the FAQs, it's full of good info.
