TX Looking for Help Diagnosing Idle Issue (Video Attached)

Hey everyone, I’ve attached a video showing my problem (ignore the non-working gauges lol)

Quick background:
  • It was flooding badly and wouldn’t start, so I adjusted the float levels to spec.
  • Before that, we also tweaked the throttle opener a bit, thinking it might be the issue.
  • After the float adjustment, it only idles well if I add a washer to the throttle cable at the pedal—so it idles around 1000–1500 RPM.
  • It doesn’t stall and has been running fine for a few days.
  • I installed new NGK BR8EQ-14 plugs, but the tach/needle still bounces (as shown in the video).
  • The previous owner mentioned the carb needed tuning. I started tuning it using Sterling’s guide from an old thread.
  • I got to adjusting the idle speed after the mixture screw, but the idle kept bouncing, so I stopped.
Now I’m wondering—could this be a clogged fuel filter? Ignition issue? Vacuum leak I haven’t spotted? Didnt tighten the top hat of the carb enough? Or something else entirely?

Appreciate any help! 🙏

No vedio attached.

The Throttle Opener is only activated when the AC turns on. I removed mine as the AC no longer works.

If it were me I would replace the fuel filter, then test the fuel pump for output and pressure.

When I had a vacuum leak in the #2 Choke Diaphragm, the only way I could keep it from dying at stop light was to drive with toes on the break and heal on the gas.
Maybe not your issue.

yes - my gauge stopped working and most likely the wire. Im running a mechanical one in the meantime runs anywhere from 20-40 when warmed up.
