Smile Looking for the hatchback wood floor

Hi Happy RX1ers,

I am looking for the thin wood boot or hatchback floor that covers the spare. Don't know what it's called. Mine split right down the middle when I set some groceries on it. I guess it had enough over the last 23 years. I don't know what it is called - Boot tire cover floor thingy. Anyway, I know there is an expert out there that can guide me as to its name and where to buy. I would prefer to buy from one of you guys in the club.

Thanks

Mine is shot and I assume a lot of folks wood board is shot. I am going to go to home depot and get some paneling or some form of flat board and make me one.
I will take a piece of cardboard and make a template then cut out the new one with a jigsaw. Should be stronger than the original one.
Just a thought!!

1/8" Plywood should be fine, if you really think you need it go with 1/4"

first off, make sure you post in the 1st Gen for sale/wanted section when you are looking for a part. you'll get better results there. and as far as i know the SA/FB never came with a spare tire cover...i've owned 25 RX-7's over the years and have never seen one...

the wood is called Masonite
its available from Home depot, lows or any lumber store
it comes in 4'x4' and 8'x4'
i took the 8'x4' cut it in ha - lf..., glued.. and traced my old one(if no old one make something out of card board or sumthing).. cut it out with a jigsaw and it was about 20 bucks..................... took like an hour and a half......... make a finger hole where the spare is for easy access
i didnt kno my 7 came with one

Yeah I do not think there is a board there....as I recall there is a carpet..underneath that there is this black insulated kinda wooly thing that goes under, it has the snap buttons that snap into the rear wheel well screws etc. Then its just the spare....

I think thats it....

Guys
I'm telling you there was a 1/4 board over the spare with a whole drilled for your finger to pull it out. This is on a 85.5 13B 1st gener that I bought new in 1986.

he's talking about under the carpet.. its not really wood but more like really cheap partical board. and it gives the carpet a clean look. most the time they break or crack under weight or over age.

This is a very interesting post. All of my 7's just had the carpet and the black wool thing. I don't even remember any of those fancy snaps either. I guess the wood cover would give the carpet a cleaner look, but i've never had a 7 with clean carpet anyway.

Guys,
Ain't got the broken one anymore (better half pitched it) but "RX7 Allnight" correctly described the thing. Very cheapo thin board right over the tire. It came with the car original. I don't think it was added by the dealer, it looked like a factory item. Again, I bought the car new in early 86 - 1st gen body style with the 13b engine. I have kept the car in pristine condition with 59,000+ miles on it, rarely carrying anything in the back at all. My guess is that most of them busted early on and that's why those of you in the group with more RX7 experience have not seen them. Sorry I don't have it. I hope someone out there can post a pic.

could very well have been a poorly constructed part and thus thats why there are none around. my 84 GSL has 57K original miles and i am the second owner of the car and most things were original. the rear carpet has seen better days and i can imagine that if a cover were under there that were pretty cheap that it would have been long gone.

Does it show up in the parts fiche for the later years? It's not in the '80 fiche.

There are only 2 things in the 85 parts manuals

available in three colors soo carpet

and the trunk pad FA54-68-666 which i believe is the carpety mat thing with the snaps

it could have been a dealer installed item. i lifted the carpet in the 84 GSL yesterday and really saw no place for the wood to sit flush. the spare tire actually sits slightly abovethe flooring allowing no room for a cover. i'll grab a pic to explain..
