I found a '82 RX-7 with less than 70k original miles. He wants $5900 for it. It's been garage kept, original owner, no wrecks, super clean. Is this too much $$?

From a little research, I've found out this car has the 12A engine. Any complaints about it? What should I look for when inspecting the car?

I'm not sure what prices are like south of the boarder, but that seems a little pricey to me. Here in Canada I wouldn't pay $5900 Canadian for it, let alone $5900 US dollars.
If you're really interested in it, check out what your emissions laws are like in your area, and if you have to pass some test of some kind, make sure you have your air pump and at least two catalitic converters on it. I made the mistake of buying an '83 with a header and no cat and no air pump, and here in Ontario I can't pass the E-Test with that kind of set-up.
Other than that, if I could get my hands on a nice car like that, without all the rust of mine I'd be very happy, I just wouldn't want to pay that much for it!
Oh, just so you know, in case you're comparing the 12A engine to a later model RX-7, just remember, it has a lot less horsepower than some '83-'85's and all '86 and up RX-7's. Just so you know. On a possitive note though, in my opinion, the first gen RX-7's ('79-85) are the best looking ones!!!

$5900!?!?!? That car had better be museam (sp?) quality for that kinda change... Esp for an 82.

With 70k miles it probably isn't in perfect condition, and 82 isn't any particularly rare or highly desirable model, unlike the 84-85 GSL_SEs or the earliest 79s, or even the Limited editions. In all honesty, (and I'm not an expert) but I wouldn't pay any more than half of the asking price, and that's still on the high side..

People here can find some 1st gens for 3digit prices w/ a little work, I paid 1800$ for mine w/ 130k miles and have put on another 18k in a year w/ zero problems.

You can find a much better deal... Keep searching

 

Shoot-fire, Son....For that kind of grub-stake you could fly to Arizona, meet some Seven Cowboys down there, and probably saddle up a rust-free '84/'85 GSL or GSL-SE, ride 'er home and have enough left over to build yourself one hot hoss!

I bought a 88 convertible for 3300, this car is truely mint condition.. Im a fan of the 1st gen, but at that price got to AZ like Denny said, everything is w/o rust there!

Now I have seen some First gens goin for $5k, but they have like 10,000 miles and are MINT.

These types of cars seem to be for the Purist or Collector, out of resonable range for us drivers.

I would rather see these types of cars preserved or babied on weekends so 10 years from now we can be reminded what a stock mint first gen looks like.

I just sold my 83 gsl , loaded and in excellent shape (the leather sets were awesome), with 85,100 miles for 2900.00...I think the guy got an awesome deal cause I know that car...It was perfect!!........but for 5000-5900 for what you were talking, sounds real high to me...plus, from what I understand, a rx7 that sits around for a long time with out some good driving is not good for it. with that low mileage, it probabley sat...maybe other guys can tell you if it is "bad" for a 7 to sit too long. Denny????..I would wait and keep looking...( you shoulda bought my car...you would have loved it...I hated to part with it actually,,,but I have a se I have to sink some $$$$$ into so......the gsl had to go)..cjf......
