Question lock diff or not?

ive just ripped apart my diff to find that the pin thats holds in th rod conected to the 2 spider gears has snaped,
now the rod moves out too much as has been grinding up aginst the primary diff gear, lucky there isnt much damage to it and is still usable.
but...
im am going to need a new diff center becuase of the busted rod.

i could go out an buy a new one but i wanted to get the pro's and con's of welding up all the spider gears and making myself an lsd

would i have a greater chance of snaping a driver arm or treading the top off it b4 i was to blow another diff?
or would an lsd give me greater controlled fun and save me time in the end???

thanks..

p.s. i know this has been raised b4 but i had no time to search b4 i was to go an get one. sorry

dont lock your diff!!!!
there dangerous especially when you least expect it. look at getting LSD or better yet a GURU Tosen diff centre

a LSD can still get very unpredictable in the wet, were as a torsen will always be predictable

but i dont have 700 to go spend on a guru diff center , anyone wana buy me one??

i think im just going to have to to put back in a standard gen 1 diff?

but...
can i get an LSD that fits in the dif housing and still using my primary gear and driver arms. so basicly just puttin an an lsd diff center??? and what would i be expecting to pay for something like this??

The GSL-SE rear end has an LSD, and I think a few other models did too. Might want to use one of those, used, if $$$ is a factor.

posi is a Chevy brand name, short for positraction.

LSD = Limited Slip Differential, which is what some RX-7s have.

some aussie serise 3's had a LSD but they are extremaly rare and all getting on to 17+ years old now too, plus they are fetching $700-1000 for a good working condition centre these days.

The Guru diff is actually $1495 in Aussie dollars and $795 in US dollors, but that is all brand new component.

looks like the cash is the biggest problem

find an se or gsl with lsd. then get a rebuild kit. both the torsen and stock are lsd's. the difference is that the stock lsd is a clutch type. that is why you need to rebuild it after so many miles, the clutch packs have worn down. the torsen is a mechanical lsd and is known to be more predictable and can get power down earlier then a clutch lsd. it is also more expensive as you can see. so as manntis said, find an lsd at the junkyard and then when you have the extra cash, rebuild it. if you have any questions ask me since i'm getting ready to do the se swap and will hopefully be rebuilding my lsd this winter.

they're in Australia ... no SE's there from what i understand

but yeah, jeremy has a great point, why not just get a rebuild kit. it sounds like you know what you're doing, so wouldn't that be an option - at least temporarily, 'til you save for that "Guru-thinga-ma-bobbie"?????

The cost of a mazda LSD here in Australia is $AUS 700-1000 (thats just the centre) then the cost of a reubild would almost equal the the $AUS1500 fot the "Guru-thinga-ma-bobbie"

basicly only some 84-84 (series 3 sa22c) models had LSD's here, but there were a few aftermarket and imported ones about, but they simply are hard to find here thease days.

you US guys were lucky plenty of LSD's and power steering! we didnt get that at all! and seeing as i run ALOT of castor and have a bad wrist i would love power steering, oh well

ohhhh waaaah ... quit cryin' ya' big baby!!!!!
power steering has no business on an Rx-7. and you guys got the Cosmo - and that's still not an even trade-off.

Aussies = 9.7
North Americans = like ... 4

my wrist is pretty bad(broke it in 4 places), i don't actually like power steering but i could really use it!

we never got the cosmo so nerr! :P
there are a handful that are personal imports though.

Infact we didnt get alot of stuff that some guys think we did , we never got the factory 12aT, again imports (i had one).
and our 1st gens never had 13b nor EFI form the factory......
Aussies = 5
Yanks = 5

update on the diff problem..
i brought it over to my uncles house (he's a pro welder/ ex mechanic) and he goes "i just weld up either ends of that rod, its what the race cars do to stop the pin from snapping."
so yeah he welded it up, and i dont have to go speed the money on a new diff..

but i dont get my lsd now..
