littlebit of a noob question about performance specs

i am looking into getting a rx-7 as a weekend driver. Always drive trucks and wanted something small and fun to drive. from what i have read, these cars seem to be good handling cars. so, assuming it is a 12a motor(easier to find), with the basic bolt-ons; exhause/intake/Etc. seems like 150hp is about maxt to expect? is this close? now i would love to snap it around a corner(with suspension upgrades) but for the straight line????

with these basic bolt-ons, any estimates on 1/4 mile times. nothing exact, just some educated guesses so i can get an idea. also how much power can be added to drivetrain before tranny and rear need beefing-up. thanks

First, welcome to the dark side. At the top of this section are stickies with a great deal of basic information, sounds like you may have found them already, if not, bone up.

Drive train: rear should be good for 300hp, tranny 250+. With the right bolt ons and not cracking open the engine, high 14's. Depends on the engine's condition, lsd or pegleg and driver.

With suspension upgrades, these little cars are so much more fun in the twisties/autocross than a straight line.

By the way this is a non/anti-rice section fried or not. lol.

Welcome. I'm new to the dark side as well and I'm hooked. This won't be a weekend driver for you. Mine doesn't run right and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything else.

As far as handling goes they have a great turn radius and depending on the condition of the suspension and road conditions they can handle most anything you throw at them with a good deal of precision and at higher rates of speed than your average car. They were made to handle... even if they don't run right.

In a straight line they're pretty fast and have quite a bit of torque. Enough to do donuts till the cows come home.(If you have the limited slip diff it's a lot better)

Get behind the wheel of one of these and you're hooked. I'm pumped about mine and I've had it a week now.

Also you are in the right place. Here you'll find everything you need and way nice and generous people who will help you with anything, n00b or not.

150HP is about the max,the 12A exhaust ports are quite small.Porting can give you 20-30 more HP with the same mods, but requires teardown and rebuild.

Still, thats a 50% increase from just ignition, exhaust and carb mods.I ran this very setup with my old 84 12A fitted with a Yaw carb, full RB exhaust and MSD direct fire.It totally sh*t on the stock setup, huge difference in power....but eventually I got used to it and upped to a 13B 4-port....which also eventually felt slow-ish,which led to the turbo EFI phase Im currently residing in.

The downside is going to be smog compliance failure (if it matters) and fuel consumption.Even the diminutive 1.1L 12A can suck down gas like a turbo engine if you pump it up.

Also, dont overlook a light flywheel. The stock units are very heavy. While it can be expensive compared to some other bolt on mods,it make a very noticable difference in acceleration.Id list that as one of my top 3 favorite mods on a rotary....
