a little play...well, maybe alot of play.

Hi, I got a '79 12a rx7, the problem is, It's time for its Warrant of Fitness and the steering has HEAPS of play in it. Turning right, its tight, no play. Turning left however, takes about almost a quarter turn before the car actually changes direction. This is most troublesome. Being a '79 It only has the one adjusting screw I think. I've done a search and come up with fixes for steering racks with a 44mm nut and adjusting screw, but mines not like that. Is there a way to get mine tight? Also if I do need a new steering box, Would a later model one fit in easily, say a series 2 or 3 non-power steering??I really need to get a box with no play REAL soon, as this car is being built for the Rotary Nationals here in New Zealand on October 26 & 27 and it still isn't legal or painted. Please help me if you can, Thanks.

Have you checked the idler arm bushing?

This article covers both the series 1 and 2 box adjustment:
