Let’s see some RX-7s!

As some of us enter the winter season and have to put away our cars let’s post some pics of our 7s to make the season less sad lol! I’ll start, here’s my 85’ SE

I was able to buy back my 82 RX-7 a few weeks ago. I owned this car 2 years ago and thought about it almost every day. I originally purchased it from a club member who built it a number of years ago as a SCCA auto-X car. It’s light, loud, quick (not fast lol), and is basically an angry engine with a coke can bolted to it. End goal is to find a clean S3 chassis to drop the engine into and be more comfortable, ideally before next summer.

That thing is rad! Looks like a blast to drive, “not fast but quick” has got to be one of the most accurate statements about an fb lol. Would love to see the process you make on swapping engines, I know there are a lot of rollers out there, one close to me that just needs an engine I’ve been tempted to ****** up haha.

Thanks! Weighs 1850 without me in it and makes around 200whp. 6-port mild street-port 13B and Webber 48 IDA. Oh yeah, I see shells for sale every week but most need more work than this tin can lol. I love your GSL-SE, pretty unusual seeing a brown on brown car from what I understand (very jealous haha)

Wow that thing is basically a grown up go cart! Theres a shell in michigan (a bit far away from you) for 4k complete GSL from the looks of it just in need of an engine. And Thanks! Its my pride and joy. From my knowledge (I could be wrong) the desert brown exterior color was a dealer only option whatever that means lol. I never see brown on brown ones but everytime I see a picture of one It is a treat!

My plan for it is to re-wire in the original radio and take out the aftermarket one this winter (a bit harder than I thought). Come spring I am going to get a bit of paint work done (small imperfections) and then get it buffed out and ceramic coated. I am interested to see how your 7 turns out!

Sweet! I love the factory radios in the GSLs / GSL-SEs! I've had a few and they still sound good if the speakers aren't blown lol Cash is tight rn but I plan on making some improvements as I can. Keep us posted on how the radio install goes!

I know! They scream 80s audio. I replaced all the speakers as they were pretty weak. It is quite difficult being new to wiring and not having much to go off of as they cut wires for an aftermarket connecter. I have everything I need it is just a matter of figuring out what is what. May have to take it to an audio shop if I cant figure it out... and awesome keep us posted on what you do to it!

Awwww, I hate when people cut the old connectors out when they don't need to. If you don't have one (you might seeing as you've been a member for a bit) here is the link to get a copy of a service manual: https://foxed.ca/index.php?page=rx7manual
He has a wiring manual for an 85 about half way down the page.

I might start a build thread if things fall into place, we'll see!

I would love to be able to drive mine year round, but that's not the case living in northern Ohio. Here's are a few pictures of my RX series cars!

Don't you guys in the north do the project car stuff in the winter?

Summer in the south it's too hot in the middle of the day to drive without AC or wrench on them. Don't have to shovel sunshine though.

Typically, yes, over the winter is when I dig into my bigger projects. Something about working on the car in your garage or building over the winter is very cathartic.

Here's mine with a V8 and dog box 4spd shoved 10" back into the firewall. It's actually rear heavy with 55% of it's 2325lbs on it's rear axle...

That’s very cool! Why did the drivetrain have to be moved back “so far”? What engine/transmission combo are you running?

Back when I did it, moving the engine/trans/dash/pedals/driver back 10" allowed me to remove a 100lb lead weight from inside the rear bumper and still hook up on a random chip seal country road.
It's a 355sbc with two stages of N2O backed by a Ford Toploader 4spd that I faceplated. It was the test mule for developing my ClutchTamer and Hitmaster clutch control products.

Basically cut the trans tunnel and firewall out in one piece, chopped 10" off the back, then welded it back in...

At first glance it still looks stock on the inside...

Wow! The fab work looks amazing (I’m not a fabricator but would like to learn in the near future) I was confused by the interior initially, it looked stock. I’m sure that thing absolutely hauls the mail compared to the 12A!!

Here it is back 2014 when it only had 700hp on tap...

FB's have a really well-designed body structure, this one has no roll bar at all or even any added chassis reinforcements. Been V8 powered since the mid '90's, still no cracks or buckles. The above was a 1.30 60' on radials, although it does have a narrowed 8.8 with a TruTrac diff and a torque arm instead of the original 4 link. Just a fun hotrod for the street, not a race car.

Random photos of my 85 GSL-SE I've had for thirty years, unfortunately I "can't" drive her 12 months out of the year anymore however, I could the first twelve years I had it as it was my daily driver, and I loved it!

Wow!

I’ve always been more of an FD fan, but that thing makes me wanna rethink things. Looks simply outstanding.

Congrats on owning that baby.
