Just to maybe help? -- The heater cores in first gens rarely go out (we've had one or two in 10+ years), however, the HEATER valve does like to leak (15 or 20 of those in 10+ years).
When the valve leaks, the plastic around it and the heater core directs the leaking water over to the passenger side carpet/tunnel (usually) making it look just like the heater core is leaking.

Do yourself a great favor, and LOOK at the valve first. It is up by your right knee/shin, under some plastic panels. Get them out of the way, then you have to get your head down there, with a light, and look up at the valve.

Replacement of the valve is supposed to be impossible without removing the whole dash, but we can explain how to do it (if that IS the problem) if you call or e-mail (mail@mazdatrix.com)
