Lazy starter - slow to turn then picks up
Wondering what could be causing the starter to crank very slowly (sluggish at first) then picks up speed turning over the engine??? Battery is new, 1985 GSL-SE has 78,000 km and starter may/may not be original (I have not replaced it in the 8 years I have owned it). Car will start but I am nervous it will eventually leave me stranded.

That's usually a sign of a weak battery (highest current draw is needed to go from sitting still to moving, then momentum of the flywheel helps).
If you're sure the battery is in good shape and large enough, then I would look to clean up the connections for the starter cabling, both positive and ground sides. Corrosion at the cable connections increases resistance, which robs deliverable power.

If you are running original battery cables these would be suspect. They can look fine outside and be shot internally. As for the starter, these are actually pretty easy to pull (hint: snap a photo of the way the wires are attached!). Take it to a good auto-electric shop and have them throw it on the bench. They can tell you if its up to snuff...
