Knowing the differences

Hey every one,

I have always found myself in a dillema. I have a fair amount of knowedge on the rx7 series ( FB,FC,FD) but i'd really like some info on how to tell the differences between the FB series(1-3) and the differces between the FC series (4,5,savanna). engine specs, body ect.

thanx for any info

andrew

S1 aka SA (79-80) - has different looking bumpers and the stock air box has a vac line coming out of the center of it. Also has a front mount oil cooler.

S2 (81-83) - "regular" FB bumpers, no vac line in air box, different exhaust system containing catalytic converters instead of what the S1 uses (cant think of it right now). Slightly different interior.

S3 (84-85) - Same as S2 on outside, different dash. Uses "beehive" oil cooler instead of front mount, except on GSL-SE model equipped with 13B. 1983 model S2 also had the beehive.

S4 - Easiest way to tell is the black side molding (stripes down the side), a few interior differences, not all too knowledgeable on the FC

S5 - Has color matched side moldings and a slightly more agressive front bumper. thats about all I know.

Not sure on years of FC. I think the S4 is 86-88 and S5 is 89-92

In addition to above:

S2 vs S3 - Externally, The S3 has small brake cooling ducts in the front airdam, the S2 doesn't. The S2 has an external lock on the gas cap cover, the S3 does not.

Interior - In the US, The S2 has a very similar interior to the S1 with a central tachometer in the guage cluster, a rounded guage cluster hood, a sliding **** for climate control, and eyeball style air vents. The S3 has the speedometer and tach sharing the center of the guage hood, a more squared shape to the hood, fake stitching around the dashboard, turning dials for temperature control, and more conventional rectangular vents in the dash board. I don't know if the interior was changed where you live.

I think the S3 interior was USDM only, along with the 13B SE. May have included Canada too.

The LHD North American spec (incuding Canada) cars had the interior updates on the S3. All RHD markets used the "old" dash. The GSL-SE (84-85 MY) with the 13B was North America only, although the euro cars and the 12A Turbo (in Japan only) shared the suspension and brake updates wth the GSL-SE.

In March 1982 the 12A 6PI (6 port induction) was indroduced in Japan (I think in europe as well). In September 1983 the 12A Turbo was launched in Japan.

I know I can be and old odd duck at times, but I do like the brown interior, gray is my 1st choice though. Right now I have 85's in all 3 oem colors. Burgandy/maroon sucks.

Nice interior SevenHeaven.

Thanks trochoid,

I guess I'm an old odd duck as well because I like the brown interior as well. The brown on brown combo was not my first choice but it has really grown on my over the years

S4 is all 2nd gens from 86-88.
S5 is all 2nd gens from 89-91 (92's were all carry over 91 stock)

The S5 was a refining of the FC,much the way the FB(S2)was a refinement of the SA(S1).
The S5 engines recieved more power and smoother EFI controls, the black trim was color coordinated, the tailights were smoked and had round illumination sections, different gauges/shifter/steering wheel, the 4 lug base model was deleted and the model lineup was simplified with more standard options and less individual special models towards the end.

During the 86-88 years there was the Base,Sport,SE,Vert,GXL,GTU,TII,10th Anniversary.......by 91 they had chiseled it down to 3 basic packages with most options being standard......much like the FD was.
