key to rotary life longevity

I just wanted to hear what everyone here do to make sure that their 12a or 13b motors live for a looooooong time.

- I make sure I change the oil at the very least every 3000 miles.
- Make sure I warm the car up before I take off.
- Atleast once a day I take it out and run it hard.
- When I drive around I always keep the rpm above 2500rpm(I read this in a hyper rev magazine where Amemiya said its not good to drive it under 2500rpm)
- Check oil level once a week
I can't think of anything else other than regular maintenance stuff...oh yeah you have to read a bed time story when you tuck her in for the night.

The bed time story is key. Without that, she'll get lonely. I neglected mine for over a month and she ran poorly for the next 3.

I'd say at least once a WEEK run it hard. tho i usually ran mine hard 3 or 4 times a day... Just dont abuse it. Use your head.

-Make sure your temperatures are appropriate. Last thing you want is to overheat.
-Replace your fuel filter and oil filter and air filter regularly.
-Check your timing every so often and make sure its spot on.

Thats all i can think of off the top of my head to add to your list...

crap... Mine's been ignored for the winter... :-/
But I'm buying her presents! Will that help??!

Temps have been most important to me so far... (along with fluids)
I suppose I should stop being lazy and check my timing (as I've never set it with a timing light)

i usually cruise around 3k rpm. not so hot on the fuel economy but, at least in my 12a experience, there's no power below that.

oil changes on schedule.

i make sure to build oil pressure before i drive it, and hit operating temp before i flog it.

when i DO flog it, i never really hit redline on purpose. i usually give it a 500-1000rpm cushion up top to minimize seal chatter. max power is around 6500 anyway...

is every 20 days count?

- Make sure I warm the car up before I take off.

yeah i wish io can do that without my neighbors bitching about the noise of my car

- Atleast once a day I take it out and run it hard.

ohh i thought it was every time

- When I drive around I always keep the rpm above 2500rpm(I read this in a hyper rev magazine where Amemiya said its not good to drive it under 2500rpm)

2500 or 7500?

- Check oil level once a week

i doit every hour

Most Definitely Mine has been hibernating comfortably under her cotton tarp throughout the cold Canadian winter, and I think she'll definitely appreciate the RB Spring set and KYB GR-2 Shocks she gets when she wakes up in the late spring

Jon

Oh, and about that "OMPs suck" thing... I rebuilt my OMP and I think it's better than running premix sometimes, because premix is either too much or too little. Too much promotes carbon buildup, too little promotes seal wear and can threaten apex seals if it's impoverished (ie: forgot to add last fillup). I think the best compromise is an OMP with a 2-stroke resivoir, but a rebuilt stock OMP runs just fine for a non-racer

both of my sevens run a external premix tank filled with ashless 2 stroke oil, best 100 dollars you can spend on preventive maintenence in my opinion, especially on the 89 up with elec omp, on my 12a i set the pump to visibly smoke at 6k . the kit concluded they would mix approx 500-1 ratio , ive been figuring mine at about 300-1,

Ok So I know the brand and viscosity of the oils I'm supposed to use, the proportion of coolant/water, how to check if the omp is operating properly, etc. but I just realized I don't know what specific bedtime stories to read her. Are there any specific ones that produce better results? aftermarket products on this? Please help, I don't want her to run poorly because of it!

Edit: Oh I forgot to mention it, its a '85 GSL with a 12A engine.

The Civic and the Seven

You might find it listed under "The Tortoise and the Hare"

Hope I didn't spell that incorrectly.

HAHAHAH!! I like! I like. My car is into sci fi and fantasy books, actually. I read her the entire "Ender's Game" series and sub-series, and now we've started on the Dragonbone chair books.

She especially liked the Lord of the RIngs series. Thats a classic (just like her!)

I was thinking more on the lines of Dr. Seuss. Also, I make sure that I give her a good breakfast because you know thats the most important meal of the day.

My car comes home crying to me sometimes because the other cars make fun of her. I tell her don't get upset because they're just jealous. See these other cars are mostly wrx's and civics and such that are driven by highschool kids that don't know how to take care of their cars(yes I said wrx, I can't believe how spoiled these kids are around here).

I think I'm going to get her some kind of music lesson too because I like the way she sounds from 4000rpm and up

I want mine to understand exactly why she exists, and to get to know the creator. So, I read her the Bible. Yep, chapter and verse out of the Mazda Factory Service Manual. We're on The Book Of The Exhaust right now...

On a modified motor I would make doubly sure to prevent detonation. Most people point to air/fuel ratio but you MUST remember timing (total timing) as well.

And REMEMBER, on a scale of 1-10, AUDIBLE detonation is like a 6 or 7 - you may be damaging your engine and not even hear it! My theory has been that many apex seals have bit the dust due to damage from detonation, inaudible and audible.

No bedtime stories for mine. I just close the garage door and give her and the miata a bit of "private time".

another one is KNOWLEDGE. if you don't know what your car likes, you aren't gonna treat her right.

it's amazing all the new stuff i'm learning now that i've upgraded from a GSL to a GSL-SE. aux port actuators, tps, all that fuel injection stuff... CRAZINESS.

also, don't use autolite plugs

Run it to redline at least once a day, I changed the oil every 2k miles. My gslse had 150k miles or so when I crashed it. The motor lives on in my friends rx-3 now and probably has about 200k miles on it. No smoke, runs flawlessly.

yeah the previous owners of my car apparently knew how to keep up a 13b. it's got 215k mi on it, and it feels super fresh.

i'm tempted to swap the motor (since i'll be taking it on some 500ish mile roadtrips this summer), but it'd be sweet to see a quarter million mile rotary

Yess!! I have followed the advices for the different bedtime stories and now my car starts at the first crank, doesn't smoke, is iddling smoother, doesn't overheat anymore, and the blown rotor magically unblew itself! and all this time I was trying to solve all these problems paying attention to the pitty details, missing the simple and bigger remedy!

Ok so... how exactly do you check if the OMP is doing its thing properly? Also, how do you adjust the timing?

I got 160K on mine, ruinning smooth. Check oil level like every other day, let her warm up, etc. I don't particularly redline it, but occasionally rev it up to 6500.

Whoah yeah, that'd be the business.
I'm gonna run carbon apex seals in my next 12A coz I like the high rpm wail of a sweet rotary and they shouldn't kill my nice 12A turbo housings (running N/A bridgeport) if it all does go bad.
Guess I should go for the bedtime stories too though just to be safe.

The winner, but by no means slow :P The story ends slightly differently in this case. The tortoise has ground effects lights and a fartpipe, the hare doesn't need to sleep because he only has to be *slightly* modded to beat the Tortoise, so his fuel economy is good enough to finish the race.
