Just got my 7, new to the community...

Hey everyone, I just got my first RX7 (I've wanted a 1st gen since I was 2 years old ), so I decided to join RX7club. This looks like a great place, hope I fit in and don't unintentionally raise hell, being a Honda owner and all... (Don't worry, I'm not like that )

I'll post some pics of the 7 tomorrow hopefully.

Welcome to the forum and the Darkside. We have many ex-Honda members, along with about any other car you can think of.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs, download what you need and spend lots of time reading. Start with the FAQs and hit the archives for writeups on some of the mods.

Thanks guys, it's an '83. I'm really not sure on the trim level (I have to look that one up), but it has the 13" steelies, and leather seats. And it's formula white. I read Trochoid's sig a while back, and my car came with the FSM and all the literature that it came with from the factory (I think) even the window sticker.

Edit: The previous owner did half of the exhaust work I wanted to do, Re-did the exhaust with one cat, and a Racing Beat muffler at the end. Sounds awesome when I wind it up.

i second that!!! glad you've bee searching and learning, good to hear. definatly need to see some pics! does the car have rear disc brakes? this should help you determine trim level. if it does, and the disc rear end is original, you have a gsl.

I have drums in the back, and I really need to adjust them, along with the steering box. I guess I've found my weekend project.

Do not adjust the steering box until you have checked the idler arm, tierods, ball joints, wheels bearings and made sure they are in spec first. If they are not in spec, no amount of adjustment will take out all of the play and you can over tighten the steering box. The box is very expensive to replace once that happens.

I already checked everything else, it's the steering box. The gear mesh it off to the point that I can feel the gear teeth when I turn at low speeds. I read alot about people complaining about how hard the first gens are to steer at low speeds, but it really isn't that bad. My dad has a '84 Porsche 911 Carerra, THAT is a car that is rough at low speeds!

Its more of a pain when you have sticky tires on a hot day, your 6'2" and barey fit as is, your trying to slip the clutch in reverse to get out of a parking spot while cranking the wheel and bracing yourself against whatever you can find but the steering wheel is rubbing on your thighs/knees. But yeah, its not that bad, just people that don't drive non-power steering cars hate it and aren't used to it, but you adjust.

You are perhaps one of the best n00bs I've seen join in quite a while. You will be very well like here. Sounds like it is the base "S" model. Pictures are a definite must

Thanks for the responses guys. I drove the car some more today, took pics, and noted a few things that might be broken. The car sometimes lurches as you're decelerating under 2000 RPM. I read something about the flapper valve that shuts off fuel and air to the rear rotor (I can't remember the technical name), sticking and doing this. Also 5th gear whines, kind of loud like straight cut gears, but who cares? It's still a blast to drive.

Here are the pics as promised...

Hahahaha... Frog eyes...

I think this is wax or something that the previous owner got on the tips...

Stupid question time!
There is a vacuum actuator that is disconnected, I've seen it removed on de-vacced cars before, I just can't remember what it is. Does anyone know if this would cause a problem if it was disconnected, but not removed?

I let my friend drive it (he has a '95 Nissan 240SX), and he was complaining about how hard it was to drive the whole time.

I just got an in-your face taste of the "OH ****" oversteer I've been hearing about. I took a roundabout too fast in the rain... You can guess what happened next, "Wheeeeee! Oh ****!" I ended up in some grass off the side of the road with some lady in a Kia SUV staring at me like I insulted her, lol. It really doesn't help that my tires are ancient and really crappy, as I was only doing 20mph. I wasn't expecting that! I need tires.

Yeah the rear end will step out fairly easy if you're not careful, lot of fun though. The car looks great though, now you just need a set of my lights to start things off LOL(Yeah I know shameless plug)
