Just got an FB33
well i just paid $700 for an RX-7 GSL. it has disk brakes all around(didnt think that was on GSL models...) and the interior is in great shape. the body doesn't have any dents or rust...but the paint is almost gone hehe. all electronic stuff works(popup lights, mirrors, a/c, all lights, has a pioneer radio) from what i can gather im the 3rd owner. the original owner was a lady who put 240,000 miles on the car, and the engine was replaced 100,000 miles ago. they guy i bought it from has had it since february..he wanted to fix it up(he's a former mazda technician)but he was running short on money...he was actually a professional sport bike racer but he lost his sponsorship hehe..he replaced the battery, terminal, master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, oil filter. the car runs..but it has a coolant leak in the front rotor compartment. it fouls the plugs for a min or so..but once it gets warm they start firing and burn off the water.
onward patsy...what i want to do is pull out this 12A, and drop in a rebuilt 12A with warant and a mild street port. i also want to replace the tires/wheels(still has the originals..great condition but i hate the way they look lol) ill give it some paint, maybe a mariah front lip, tokico suspension, racing beat exhaust.
all the emissions have already been removed (thanks mazda guy!) as well as a pipe welded in place from the header back to the muffler. original airbox is still installed...
i cleaned it up today, degreased the engine, washed it, vacuumed and such. im still letting the engine dry out till tomorrow(i tried to start it about an hour after i rinsed it off, wouldn't crank..check dist cap..little wet..whiped out..still no crank )
anyway, i want to know what i should do for this car...is my choice good engine wise? anything i should check out on the car before i start driving it very often? praise for my find? i also own a '98 honda prelude...man do i hate front wheel drive lol
here she is

If you plan on driving it then I would run the current 12A thru the rest of it's life, then maybe do a 13B swap. Welcome to the forum BTW, it's always nice to see new members who share our interests. You will find A LOT of useful info here. Good luck!

so you're saying this car has at least 340k miles??? holy crap!!
jack that thing up, check all the linkage underneath... replace with polyeurethane bushings.
Check the Drive shaft U joints.
how much play is in the steering? Check out all the steering linkage!!
Check fluid levels in the tranny and rear end.
Get a Haynes Manual and read up!!
BTW- ALL GSLs have 4 wheel disk and LSD, but with that many miles, your LSD is probably shot.

Anothere thing you should do is change the oil (if you havent)
Get the Rad flushed, change the feul filter, change the Transmission Oil (I assume its a stick), and Rear End Oil.
Man its great to see a new owner that is knolagable.
Have fun

If you are gonna put a new motor in it, I'd spend the extra cash and go with a 13b as well... .1 more litres, but it's the bigger of the two... I got sad the other day when a guy pulled up in a Goldwing... 1.8L vs my 1.1L...

the car has 247,000 miles. the engine was replaced when the car had 147,000 miles (by mazda, i have paperwork for everything on the car) yeah i guess i need to check the oil levels. when i shift i hear a "cachunk" sound from behind me..what is that?? lol the engine runs great once it's warm. the car can still bark 2nd gear...which amazes the heck out of me. this thing sat for 5 years because the lady who had it broke here hip and wasn't able to operate the clutch anymore. there's actually a wasp nest in the right side view mirror lol (but apparently no inhabitants) i replaced the spark plugs yesterday and began stripping the interior...found 2 blown speakers, a puddle of antifreeze from where the owner stored a jug of it in the storage bin, but it leaked.
is there anyway to make the headlights stay halfway up? i really like this effect...but i can't figure out how to do it on this car
edit: i already bought a chilton manual for it hehe
