Just bought my first RX-7

Hi everyone. I'm Zach and I just bought my first RX-7. It's the 12 A 1.1 motor.
It was a $500 buy with the hopes of putting the other $5-600 I was going to spend on an old tuner/junker car into tuning and restoring it.

First off the body is in great condition with a few little scratches here or there but all in all for a twenty-two year old car it is in great shape. The interior as well is in great shape.

It has a new clutch, transmission, oil pan, radiator, plugs, wires, tires, fuel pump, water pump, starter, and a few various other items like electrical and hoses.
Basically everything is new but the suspension, exhaust, and motor itself.

The problems though are as follows: The fuel guage doesn't work. It won't stay running without giving it gas. It idles at 2200rpm. It pulls hard to the right when braking. There is some play in the steering wheel. When I give it gas the power seems to lag. I have to put it all the way to the floor to have any real power.

My friends and I are car tuners but are new to rotary motors and Mazda in general. We attribute the problems with stalling and acceleration to an old clogged cat which we are going to gut tomorrow to see if it helps the problem.

Any info or direction into solutions to my problems would be most helpful.
Also if anyone knows of anywhere I can find lower priced mods such as a performance exhaust and a carb kit or shortram intake for it I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Zach.

welcome to the rx7 world....the car should have came with a warning caz your going to be sucked in for life now..hahahah

ok now on a real note..short ram you would have to make your self..(its a carb car no kinda short ram crap..just good air filters and velocity stacks woot

as for exhaust you want cheep goto the muffler shop and have them build you a axle back for around 100 and put and ebay tip on it..or spend like 250 and have them build the whole thing

as for a carb kit you can get your stock carb rebuilt to flow better...or buy an after market carb/efi

if you want to make real power you need to open the motro up and port

there are lots of simple ez mods to help your car run better they get posted about 2 times a week so just log on are read as much as you can wooot have fun

i knwo more then most ppl and enough to know i dont know anything...but i can help you with anything you need oh yeah we are a smart *** bunch so dont ask dumb questions

cheers PaTricK

Thanks man. I am contacting Undercar Specialty Warehouse(local exhaust fabricators) Monday to have them build me an exhaust. I'm going to go with a 2.25 pipe and eleminate the cat. I should be able to get that for about $150 with these guys. They do nice work too.

Now a question. The motor sounds almost electric. It has a high buzzing noise like a bee from the exhaust. Is this because of the exhaust and will it be quieted down with a new one or is that the motor itself and will it always be like that?

I'm definately putting the best muffler my budget can afford on it. The entire exhaust system is all original. Rust City. Why the guy I bought it off of put all of the money in the engine and never bothered with the exhaust or suspension is beyond me. He's a friend of a friend and my friend helped him do all of the engine work. It's running. I just want to get it running a little better and to quiet down the WAY TO LOUD TO STAND DRIVING CAUSE I HAVE NO EXHAUST issue. I want it to be loud and intimidating not loud and irritating. I think I can accomplish that.

I'd sign on but I have to be at work at 10am and the past 5 hours has been an ordeal what with getting it running and getting it the hour drive home which took more like 3 hours. So I'm going to bed. Thanks again and I'll be on tomorrow. Night.

Yeah I say do some searching before you do your exhaust Rx7 can get really irritating if you don't get the right exhaust set up. And if your going to eliminate the cats your going to need some kind of pre-silencer or resonator because it will be extremely loud.

Oh and congratulations on the new 7.

Any Pictures?

Thanks.
No pictures yet. I bought it at 11pm without a camera so I'll snap some when I get the chance to and post them up here first thing.

Welcome to the dark side man,

1) brakes pulling right indicate left front caliper not functioning correctly
2) what year is it, 84/85 have aproblem with third wire on fuel sender rotting off
link https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/fixing-gas-tank-540044/
3) do a search of shutter valve, I would say this is your problem on the idling issue, its an easy fix
4) steering is somewhat poor in RX7 anyway but check your four tie rods, idler arm bushings and bearings for play.

The search key at the top right will help you find specific problems, search before asking or some people will jump on you.

Good luck, there's a lot of us rotoheads in Ohio.

Steve

Thanks.

We figured the left caliper wasn't functioning.

Does the shutter valve have an adjustment screw like other engines?

Will parts off of an '86 fit my '84? I'm thinking exterior and interior. I would like to find a body kit in a junk yard as I like the looks with the air dam/lip under the front bumper and then the side skirts that run the length of the car.

I know about searching before posting. I've been a forum junkie for about seven years now. I just figured I'd get a few quick n00b questions out of the way and see if anyone had any links to parts, wheels, body kits, stickers, goodies, and the like.

Just block the shutter valve off, the hose at the rear of the aircleaner closest to the drivers seat, block it, it doesn't do anything detrimental and makes a huge difference, I pulled the hose and clamped a bolt in there.

Not much from a 86 will fit in the 84, seats maybe, engine and trans will, if it has 5 lug wheels you can make the brakes work on your 84 also.
