If the speedo doesn't work at all, then it's just as likely to have come loose at the tranny, which is much easier to check. Just get under it and check high on the driver's side, and make sure it's seated and tight.

tach is stuck in volt mode. I've been reading on it and it looks like i could try switching the coils to see if one is bad?
The coils are not stock, they are made by crane cams. that may have something to do with it, I guess.

The crane cams coils are a fine coil for replacement, i doubt that is the issue
And the smoke "could" be the 2 stroke oil that the PO put in the tank, if after you drain and put new gas in it is still there, well... Just wait and cross that bridge when you get there.

Yes you can switch the coils, but if you have a bad secondary coil the car will not run very hot.
But you know more than I did when I got my 1st 7 so you will probably figure it out!

Smoke is grey/white, and only happens on startup. Due to the smell, I'm fairly certain that it's the two stroke (smells like a weed eater haha). Once I get some tires, I can get some fresh gas in the car and start driving it around to loosen everything up.
What are some good ways to get the carb clean besides taking it apart? It seems like a big job to rebuild the thing, but I'm sure there's a little bit of varnishy old gas build up in it.

you probably do not want to rebuild it yourself... The kits you get at like NAPA do NOT come with everything you need.
I did it last year with my NIKKI and it was way out of wack afterwords.
There are people on the site that I've heard do a very good job... And they will romove all the emissions of it too.

rebuild or remove, and clean the carb. the easiest way is to remove it and pull the top half off. clean the floats, the float bowls, remove and clean the jets, remove the air bleeds one at a time and clean them. replace the accelerator pump diaphram. pretty sinmple really. just a basic cleaning and replacing of worn parts. replace the fuel filter, plugs, wires, i'll sell you a distributor(minus the ignitors, as those had been removed before i aquired the distributor) for $50 shipped to your door, replace all vaccume lines, replace the oil and filter, the belts and hoses. flush the cooling system and replace the thermostat. that should put you in business.

GOT WANKEL?
the coils off of a points style SA are different than those off of an electronic ignition FB. I wonder if the coils you have on the car are for electronic or points.

any way to tell that?
I'm going to try to buy a parts car off the guy who sold me this one, it is an 84 and would have a lot of useful parts I bet. Stock wheels and the newer ignition system alone are worth a couple hundred.

That's what I was thinking as well. I'm 99% certain that they are the wrong ones, which may cause problems. The stock coils are 9v and the electric aftermarket ones are all 12v, IIRC.

Well I'm running my stock ignition(FB) on my SA motor, and I have no problems with it.
Is what I'm saying apply to what you guys are telling him??
Now you got me all confused

The parts car is still for sale, he's asking 300.
How much is a running 84 gsl auto with NO title worth? I want to part it out and make my money back after taking the parts I want.

No parts for 79
I set out to restore my 79 a few years ago, but found out that it is almost impossible to get parts for that year. I was told by my 7 mechanic that an 83 or newer 7 is the way to go. I found an 83 and have restored it to it's original glory, inside and out, including locating an original factory electric antenna. Good luck with the 79. I will part out my 79, including the factory wheels when it will no longer pass California smog, if anyone needs parts.

Well it sounds like he's running the points ignition distributor with electronic ignition coils, which would be a no-no. That's what we meant. I've long since ditched my points for a DLIDFIS setup and it is a very nice improvement, but running just the coils will cause problems without swapping the dizzy and ignitors as well.

any thoughts on how much i should pay for the 84 parts car?
When i get the parts car an electronic dizzy will be goin in, so hopefully that will solve my issues.

Well worth $300. Scrap price on just the car shell is about $100 right now.
But there is not a lot you can use on the 79, Brake compontes have a different thread pitch, But you could swap the entire rear and front which is considered an upgrade to the old style brakes on the 79. Electronic Ignition will swap. Core engine will swap.
are you in AL? that car does not need a title I think, Check your laws.

Stock wheels are easy, I will sale you as many as you want for $25 each.
In GA a car older then 86 did not need a title just a bill of sale and you could register and tag the car, I think AL is the same or about the same. one of very few states that do this.
With the scrap price up, My general rule is I will pay $100 for any 7 sight unseen, $200 with pics, any higher and I just make sure there are some usable parts, The Cats on the can bring almost $100.
