Just bought a 1st gen GSL with 51k miles - keeping it nice?
Hi guys. I used to post a fair amount on the forum, but I eventually got a Supra and drifted away. But today I picked up a pristine '83 GSL with 51k miles, for $2800. I love it and want to keep it nice, so I have a few questions. I've done a search and have not really come up with conclusive info on this, mostly just arguments.
1. I've heard a lot about pre-mixing 2-stroke oil in with the gas. It seems like the thing to do, so I think I will. What's a good product to use, and is 1:150 a good ratio to use for typical spirited driving?
2. Is a crankcase breathing thing really only needed on a race car, or is it a good idea to put it on a 12a anyways? Mine has typical emissions systems and they will be staying on.
3. The PO has been using Castrol GTX 10W-30 in the crankcase. I think I'm going to stay away from synthetic, just because the normal oil seems to have proven itself. Does the rotary burn this well?
Thanks

1 i use royal purple 2 cycle for my car most who dont have an omp premix 1 oz per gallon, or you could do what i did and install a dry sump system thingie and have the engine meter 2 stroke into the intake in the right amount instead of mixing it in the tank if youre keeping the omp, i dont think you need to mix as much
2if you have the stock emissions your crankcase is ventalated already
3 i use castrol 10w30in cold weather 20w50 in hot weather( some say it is too thick to run in a rotary but the haynes manual suggests it for temps of 15*-120*F), i also use a quart of lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer to keep the leaking to a minimum.

If you are keeping the emissions and mop system stock, no real need to make any other mods to venting or pre-mixing.
I thought the price was a bit high until you posted pics, beautiful car.

awesome car!!! i love the red! oddly enough, my GSL is red as well, but i have the sunrise red. as for oil, when the weather is warm, use 20W50. thats what the owners manual calls for as well as the fsm. i personally use 10W40 when it turns chilly then i put the car away for the winter. the only oil i use is castrol gtx. oil is a big debate here, lol. use what you prefer. great looking car, i'll look foward to seeing more pics as you post them!
Took it into emissions today, it passed in 30 seconds with flying colors. They said it was the cleanest running car they'd had all day.
One sound system question - can the stock deck handle nicer speakers? The stock sound system is kind of muddy, but I'd like to leave the stock deck in so I can keep the neat EQ and position stick.

is that deck even stock?
if it is then the deck isnt what powers the system, its the two 25w amps under the storage bins.
If you want to keep the stock setup then just swap out those amps with something real, as well as new speakers all around. I think that should work...
nice find man, too bad you got the menstrual-cycle-red interior.

Very nice car. Make sure you keep it original. On the sound system alot of times it's just the speaker cones that have deteriorated. Looking at the picture of the interior is the steering wheel in need of restoration or is it just the lighting?
hey!! you live in wisconsin? what part? i live in racine and i am gettin a 83 also..no sure what model..but i wont be able to drive it for 2 more years..but mine is black burgandy interior an only 29,000 original miles
