Jspec 12turbo questions?
I have a 83' Limited Edition. And I'm starting to plan out what I'm going to do with it. I just spent the whole day at the shop hangin around TII's and an FD. And well what can I say I'm turbo happy now lol. And I was thinking that the amount of money I would spend for a street port. And a new racing beat holley set up. I could have my self a jspec turbo motor. Now how different are these motors? Could I rip down my 12a and use parts to rebuild the turbo one? I kinda feel bad about ripping it appart because it pulls so strong. It will break the tires loose pretty good. But the cost to make any real power of of my car would be pretty high. And with the 12a turbo thats a bit over $900 for the motor. Plus what ever for rebuild stuff. And then I would have a car that I would be very happy with performance wise. Let me know some specs on the 12a turbo. I found the motors on cork sport. But don't have much info. Let me know thanks!

well price for price id go 13bt.... i 2 was looking at the 12at but for the price of the motor, ic and standalone cpu, you could get a 13bt and port it with a large street , do some larger injectors and a front mount ... and a afc to piggy back the stock cpu and get a bit more power.... plus a new front cover and oilpan. plus theres TONS more stuff out for a 13b t than a 12a t

True the only thing that makes it a little intreuging. Is that it will bolt up to my driveline you know. Becuase otherwise I'm going to have to like swap out pretty much my whole drive train you know. And **** 165hp out of the box would be great lol. Add an exhuast intake and maybe add a intercooler. Get a little more hp. I just like the idea of direct drop to the driveline. I guess I'll look at it a little more. The guy at the RX7 shop here called Banzi racing is doing a TII in a first gen. But I don't know that's alot of work ya know.

The Jspec 12at engine is not especially powerful in its stock form producing slightly less power than a 13b. Remember the 165 often quoted is JIS, equivalent to about 135hp at the flywheel when mearured in SAE. You can get that easily with a 12a with bolt on mods.
To get any decent power you need a range of modifications to bring it up to 13bt power standards, for a start you will need a new fuel management system, intercooler, exhaust and turbo. To get any reliability with a used 18 year old engine you will need a total rebuild. The boost will be higher than stock incresing load.
It will cost you more, not be as strong, and lack flexibility at the bottom end. The 12at has a stronger trany than the 12a so if doing the transplant its normal to change both.
