jeff20b question

hey. got the dlidfis as you know. question is, does the timing do anything to it? put nitrous on the car and got a ping in 4th. so i'm thinking that the way it works the timing won't control the leading. please let me know how the timing effects the leading.

It still is adjustable since you still have the distributor signal sending to the ignitor. It just fires twice as fast so it will be kinda hard to see everything with the timing light. I hope that helps some

DLIDFIS is still just as adjustable as a stock FB ignition system is. I'm boggled. Where did you get your info from? I may not have mentioned it specifically in my article, but it's only because the actual timing is unaffected. Yours still has J-109 ignitors, right?

Try adding a little more fuel with your nitrous shot. Actually, why not detail your setup here. It's possible that the Nikki, or whatever carb you're using, needs to be adjusted.

I honestly don't know if your DLIDFIS was even set up correctly in the first place. I remember when you questioned if DLIDFIS was a myth because it didn't affect your engine in any way. To be honest, your project was the first I'd ever run across that didn't at least improve some small aspect of the runability of the engine. It threw me for a loop, it really did. I may get a chance to see it in real life some day, but untill then, I can only guess. good luck with it.

By the way, I think it's against forum rules to address a thread to a particular user. Ask a mod so you don't get into trouble.

Shouldn't you retard or lock the timing when running nitrous?

With nitrous (N2O), you absolutley need to pull out timing and run only premium, high-octane fuel...same as if you'd bolted on a turbo.

so with the dlidfis the leading doesn't fire at the same time? i was under the assumtion that the the leading sparks at the same time consistantly. can't even figure out where i got that from. but help me out on this.

Jeff's system (DLIDFIS) makes the Leading ignition fire in "wasted spark" mode, meaning the Leading plugs fire an extra time, late in the exhaust stroke, simultaneously with the other rotor, which is initiating combustion. It is called Wasted Spark because that is exactly what the extra spark is...wasted. It does absoultely nothing whatsoever, except -- perhaps -- clean up some residual unburned hydrocarbons trapped next to the trailing apex seal (that's Mazda's excuse for implimenting it in 2nd gens and later). There is an additional claim that the direct fire setup adds spark energy, but the effects are questionable. Regardless, it would have no bearing on your current problem, which sounds timing related....did you retard the timing before boosting your motor with Nitrous? If not, there's the answer!
