Interesting effect after changing real axle oil
Just changed the black "taffy" in my real axle. Well.... it wasn't quite the consitancy of "taffy" but it was definitely some ugly shi^H^H^H stuff. Anyway.... prior to changing the "oil", and I use the term loosely, my right rear tire was always the one to chirp when going from 1st to 2nd. Now, after the oil change the left one does the work. Now admittedly I know squat about rear axles. Can anyone explain the interesting phenomena? BTW, I brought it down to the local "Quicky Lube" for the job and the guys just swarmed all over the car. I was even able to talk "Wankle shop" with one of 'em. He suggested I put a 20B in. Yeah right.... I was shocked he even knew it existed. I thought that was pretty cool.
Oh and one other thing...... the guy said he thought my 85 GS had a LSD rear in it. He explained that the rear had "tags" on it and that was a good indication that it had an LSD. Any thoughts? TIA

8krpm is not enough
Well, my GSL-SE definatly has the LSD rear end in it (ask me how I know ) and there's no tag to the effect. If you've got drum brakes, then you've probably got an open diff, since only the GSL-*'s came with LSD diffs and they had disc brakes in the rear. Of course you could get a GSL-* w/o LSD, but that's because some people complained about the gear whine from the LSD mechanism and the dealers swapped them out. You COULD have a drum brake axle with a LSD diff in it, but that'd be VERY unsusal, because most people just swap the whole 3rd member because the brake upgrade comes along with it (and it's alot easier than swapping the actual diff, if that's even easily accomplished).
The fact that you're getting a one-wheel-peel is a good sign that you've got an open diff too.
PS, the fluid (if you can call it that) that came out of my diff when I changed it was NASTY. It stank, and glopped out of there and was alltogether icky. The redline synthetic that went in was stinky too but much prettier (clear orange color if I remember).
