Interested in Powder coating your parts?

My friend and I are thinking of buying a small powder coating setup, we already have a sand blaster to strip parts. The idea is we would sand blast and powder coat parts in whatever color wanted, the oven is small 18" x 18" so rims, calipers, and most suspension parts are fair game. Of coarse we would post pictures of our work to assure you guys we know what we're doing, I plan putting a nice gunmetal coating on my stock rims and doing many of my suspenesion parts as well. I found a few places online that were charging $250 to do 4 rims which I think is outrageous. So tell me what you think, any interest? I haven't figured out pricing, but it wouldn't be any where near what those other poeple online were charging.

Go for it, but you'll do better locally in your immediate trade area.

Shipping cost and damage in shipping issues will make mail order powdercoating a nightmare. You won't be able to compete with our local powdercoaters' price because they don't have shipping and handling and boxing it up to worry about. And I don't have to wait for it very long. And I get to see all the work he's in the process of coating. Then I get to see my pieces coated before I pay for the work.

Thank you for the counterpoints, the main reason I want to do this is because there are simply no powdercoaters around in milwaukee and I want to powder coat my parts and I hoped I could also powder coat for other poeple. It's funny you would think that such an industrial city like milwaukee would have more stuff like this.

Good input everyone, please keep it comming.

250 is not outrageous for a shop to charge to strip/prep/coat wheels. How do I know, I've done more than a few myself. While the coating process seems very simple, and at a basic level it is, there's is more technique and labor involved than most people realise.

The fun part is when you fuckup a coating on a wheel, then have to strip it back down.....NOT!!!

Please don't let my dissuade you from doing. Make sure you have your eyes open going into it and don't expect to make a big profit off of it.
