Intercooler sizing (inlet/outlet)

I was looking for an intercooler for a first gen and ran across these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

they are all over ebay. I was just wondering what size the inlet outlets should be? Most of the coolers I saw have a 3 inch inlet/outlet. I am planning on running the stock series 4 turbo, twin scroll removed with full 3 inch exhaust, homemade ported wastegate using stock flapper for awhile. I guess I could push about 12psi through this turbo. Would the 3 inch openings be too big for the stock turbo? I would need to run 3 inch piping too right? Would I gain turbo lag with them? I was thinking 2.5 inch would be better. One day I will probably upgrade to a bigger turbo running 14psi and I only want to buy one intercooler.

I've heard they make reducers, are there any downsides to them?

Any thoughts?

I have 2 1/4" all around. But I don't think there is any drawback using the 3" intercooler with 2 1/2 or 2 1/4" piping - maybe a slight lag.

Yeah, I may just have to use reducers or something. This is actually the size I need, the first one won't fit:

These same coolers seem to be sold all over the place under different names. I have found several australian shops selling these as well. Here's a pic of it installed on a first gen:

or maybe I'll just use the Starion cooler I have with some home made intercooler piping untill I upgrade the turbo.
