Hello,
I just bought an 85 gls/se in good shape. its got 170,000 on the clock and counting. i've been reading alot about rotarys and proper care but can you guys tell me what you know about taking care of it and some things to do in the future. so far my plans go like this:

• air/fuel filters
• pollish the alloys
• clean the engine bay (all the dirt and grime)
• fix the gas and oil pressure gauges
• new shocks for the hatch (doesnt stay up)
  then after all those, would decarbonizing be logical? the cars got tons of miles so i think it would have an effect, right?

so far its got (a new) alternator, driveshaft (yep driveshaft), clutch, wires, dizzy, plugs and a few more little parts. im used to tinkering with piston engines, (77 datsun 280z) but now i have a wenkel yay!

 

go to Advance Autoparts to get your hatch struts. There is a brand called Strongarm that are pretty well known around here. If you search the forums for "strongarm" you should be able to find the model number.

Weasel, I gotta know, what size rims are on that thing? Those are nice looking 5-spokes and also, you didn't lower your car, did you?

 

those are my 15" Konig Monsoon's wearing 205/50-15 Toyo Proxes 4's
they were salvaged off a 'somewhat dead' 323 GTX which shares the same odd bolt pattern
the car is not lowered, however I have noticed that it sits pretty low for stock..it will rub the front tires in hard corners..perhaps the suspension has settled due to mileage but the struts are still good and it rides well

ive got another question what would be some signs of the sturts going bad. when i bought it the guy said he was going to replace the struts if he kept it.

Bouncy ride and poor handeling.

Sharp impact when you hit pot holes ect ect.....

Replace them and you'll notice a very big difference.

 

ha! wish mine was in the shop getting paint already..but the pile of snow outside says otherwise yeah you will literally know when the struts have gone south..in my old scirocco it was the concussion you would recieve going over pot holes, and the strange bounce the car would get into at freeway speeds..also upon jacking the car up should you notice fluid coming out of them..well it's replacement time..good time to consider springs and bushings while into that...

 

Wow you hit the nail right on the head. A little bumb and it makes a big bang up front. so how should i go about this? check the web, junkyard? i can do all the labor my self assuming its nothing to bad.
