I'm guessing a smoking alternator is a bad thing.....

DAMN!!! well i was driving to work this morning in my FB and all of a sudden all the lights on the dash came on but the car was still running. So I pulled over into an empty parking lot and opend the hood up. I saw that the alternator by the pulley was SMOKING and it was starting to melt the alternator belt!!! Has this happen to anyone before? Im pretty sure my alt is fucked which is no big deal i'll fix it later today. Also i was trying to search about an alternator upgrade for the FB and i couldn't find that one thread that i found a while back. I just need to know which FC alterator just bolts right onto my 82 GS (no modifcation just straight bolt on.....and i believe they are 80 amps right?)...anyways i hope its just the alternatror and not anything else. What do you guys think?

You will want a 86-88 alt for a direct drop in. The NAs are 60amp,the TII are 70amp. The S5 cars are 80 amp, but require a simple wiring change. Check the archive for the thread. There is atleast one in there about a 2nd gen alt upgrade.

Yeah, sounds like it froze up. The belt would have been smoking due to running over the non-turning alternator pulley. My condolences....

Yup. When all the idiot lights come on it means the alt has either burned out or the belt broke.
