Ignorance--need help for my 79 --

Hi,
It's been a while since I was on the site. I need a new muffler for my 79--not because the original one--(which is still there) is bad or noisy--the tail pipes are totally rusted. I had a guy secure the muffler which was loose up in Cold Spring NY--He says the whole exhaust underneath looks good. (It just passed NY State inspection too)

Questions--if I replace the muffler do I need to replace the cat. converter too? To order new parts from that Victoria place is around $400. The mechanics I spoke to want $525 for parts and labor, I'm assuming that's for a cat converter as well. If I'm just replacing the muffler for aesthetic purposes--(ok it is a little rusty after 25 years) can I just do that?

It's a great car--I've had it since '80--it has 49,000 miles on it. I just don't want to be taken advantage of and have to pay for something that is not needed. Thanks

The cat doesn't need to be replace just because you are buying a new muffler. Since the car passed the NYS Inspection the cat is actually working I would say just change the muffler for now.

you can probably just buy a stock used muffler for way less than 400 bux, or even a stock replacement.

Mufflers aren't part of inspection anyway, so you have plenty of time to shop around.

The 79 does not have a Cat, so no need to replace it. For a new muffler get one from Racing Beat. A shop should charge less then $100 to put it on.

Damn! I was hoping to be the one to point that out! '79 does not have a cat.
