Ignition Systems

I'm a little baffled by all this talk of ignition systems and direct fire and such. As far as I know, the ignition system just provides a pulse of power to your spark plugs. I don't see how you can modify this for HP gains, is it providing more power to the spark plugs, or at a different time, or what's going on? Thanks guys.

A more powerfull ignition might not bring you a whole lot of extra HP (it might free up some though) but it'll give a smoother running and better reacting car. It'll also help to pass emission tests, and will improve milage.
Ignition is an often neglected area, yet it's very important. Direct fire is the way to go.
