Question ignition rotor mystery?!

ok was running at the track last night, drove the car there made like 7 runs or so, then after the 7th run comming back felt like a big power loss ( so my friend says he was the one driving) and then it shut off and didnt want 2 start up again, so we check spark, and it's only getting 2 one plug for each rotor (front leading, rear trailing) and i knew we had fuel because you can smell it getting burnt, pleanty of power also, so we finially checked under the distributor cap and found that the top half of the rotor was missing, didnt fall out when we took the cap off or nething, my question is has anyone experienced this before if so have they found the missing pieces or found out what could've caused it?...it's a stock 84 -se btw

Happened to me when my alternator belt snapped. The pieces were at the bottom beneath the rotor, and some of the contacts on the cap were bent.

It can't disappear, are there any marks on the inside of the cap?

If you switch to a 2nd gen leading coil to fire the leading side then you will not have to worry about this again. :-)

Same thing happend to Man in Black this past weekend at the race. Thought he blew another motor, but found that the rotor had grenaded inside the cap.

You've got to be very careful when putting the cap on, to make sure that it is lined up correctly. Very easy to get it a little crooked, then you get predictable results.

If you are running the 2nd gen coil and you don't care about the trailing side then just remove the ignition rotor or the cap also for that matter. :-)
