with a voltmeter. you can either check resistance across the resistor, or you can check voltage on each side. for instance, on a points ignition car, there would be 12V in front of the resistor, and ~9V behind it.

with key on im getting about 12v on all front and backs bottom and top.
I was wondering if that was right cause I think I heard it uses 12v to start the car?
also I noticed the tops of them smoking a bit?
