Ignition Coil Resistor

How do u test that these are working correctly?

with a voltmeter. you can either check resistance across the resistor, or you can check voltage on each side. for instance, on a points ignition car, there would be 12V in front of the resistor, and ~9V behind it.

I'm only getting 5.2 from the top of the lead one what could cause this?

with key on im getting about 12v on all front and backs bottom and top.
I was wondering if that was right cause I think I heard it uses 12v to start the car?
also I noticed the tops of them smoking a bit?

You should never leave the ignition switch in a points car in the ON position. The coils will get really hot.

Just too check the volts of the coils and resistors how les do u check them?

There is 12 volt top and bottom what does this mean?
