Idle switch, function?

On the carb, the small idle switch (electronic one) what does it do exactly? I know it only kicks 'on' when you out on the gas a little, otherwise it's ususally 'off' right? Well I forgot to hook the srping up so it's dangling so that the switch never kicks 'on'. will this cause any trouble to leave it off?

edit- if you click it 'on' with your finger at idle it seems to rev up about 100 rpm

On my 85 I jerked it off, actually I eliminated everything except for the 2 solenoids that control advance of the timing, and the one for the A/C.

But Im told you can eliminate them too...
