idle question

i have an 85 gsl se, sometimes when i start it after it has been off for a while the rpms will shoot up to 2000 and stay there for a like 30 seconds, then it will fall to a few hundred and go up and down between one and two hundred rpms, sometimes it dies to, if i give it gas it goes back up to 2000 and stays that way ffor about five minutes, after that the car drives totally normal. anyone have an idea of what the problem might be?

I'm a carb guy, but I remember a long discussion about this just a little while ago.
Try doing a search. Automatic choke gone haywire, IIRC.

I would start with adjusting your TPS and go from there. That alone might remedy your 100-200 idle surge and possibly more. Here's a link to a great explination with pictures by zookeeper. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...&highlight=TPS
