Identify this Wankel
Can anyone tell me if this is a series two?
The mazda that it is in is a 81 so it should be series one. But the engine is nothing like what is shown in the book.
It is missing the slack adjust pully - blue dot next to distributor.
It has two lines going to the fuel tank - two red dots.
The emissions control system is totally differnt my book shows a max of four valve controls for the CA model. There are five here the extra one is yellow. It also shows the hoses coming up over the top of the valves these curl behind. There is also the missing emissions control valve that should be inside this circle it is not - orange red circle.
Also one of the lines leading to the A/C compressor has been split in two.
I do not think this is a series one and might possibly be a early series two without fuel injection or a turbo charger.
It is obvious that someone has done work in other areas as well. The steering collumn does not match the interior and shows the car has cruise control and the carb does not have the equipment for cruise so that is from another car as well.
If the image did not show up try this link. http://www.hellanbach.com/images/Wankel.jpg

nope I have a manual from back in the day and a haynes bolth are exactly the same in thier discription. And this engine does not match in more ways than this.
Also alot of the zip ties have been replaced. Allmost anything that leads to the engine has a new zip tie on it. If you would like I can post images of the book so you can see what I am talking about.

what else doesn't match? There were NO fuel injected (or turbo charged) factory 81's in the US...
Looks like oem to me.
edit:
Also don't confuse Series 2, with Generation 2. Big difference there. Series 2 would be 1981-1983, all carbed 12a's.

this is carbed it seems however that nothing matches what is in the books acording to my books the max amount of control valves this year can have is 4. This has 5 an extra one that is yellow right in the center. The CA model has 4 the non CA model has only 3. Also if this were some variant of the CA model the EGR Control valve is missing it should be where all the hoses from the control valves are all curled up. I do not see it anywhere near where it should be. Also these curled up hoses go up and over the valves in the diagrams I have not curl up behind. The carb looks absoultely nothing like any of the diagrams in either book. More hoses more wires more levers.
It is missing pulleys where there should be.
Even the fan has a differnt number of blades, six instead of seven.
This is absoultely not the engine in either of the books that I have.
Also like I said there are other parts on the car that seem to come from differnt cars. I just need to know what series or generation ect. that this engine is.

I think that is what he is talking about, he is saying that maybe it is a 2nd gen TII 4 port engine that has been retrofitted into a 1st gen.
That pic has way too much crap in the way to make a determination, but some other guys might be able to help with the inspection process.

That just ****** hit me as well. To the left and right of your oil fill pedestal check to see what it reads. It should say 12A or 13B cast into the block facing up in the area where it says Mazda in the last pic.
Man I can't believe I didn't think of that 5 mins ago.

the clymer says its 79-81 its a much older book and it shows the 79 being way differnt but the 80 and the 81 are allmost identical but look the diagram above, and nothing like the photo.
Can you suggest a shop manual that is accurate for this engine?

There's no doubt it's a 12A, but if it would make you feel better.... lol
It's on the top of the rotor housing above the spark plug holes, where it says Mazda.
