Identify this part please--electrical related

I've taken the entire engine/interior wiring harness out of my 79 and am replacing it with one from a 1980 car. I have a question about a specific part that is bolted to the steering column under the dash. Its a small plastic box, and it appears to be hooked to the brake switch as well. What is the function of this box?

Also, is there any difference in the "ecu/pcm" from 1979-1980? I have both which I can use, but dont know if there are any advantages/disadvantages to one or the other.

Thanks much,

Slag

That small plastic box may be a relay to the brake lights. I'll have to look at mine and get back to you on that. As for the ECM, does your car even have one? I can't imagine there being an on board computer on a '79 or '80 vintage car. If there is one, it probably doesn't control much, and changing it would probably have a minimal effect if any. Just curious... why are you swapping the harnesses anyway?

I am replacing the harness because the one that is in there is all hacked to hell and has been eaten by mice in parts at one time. The one I am using has all connectors on it, is not eaten by mice, and is more complete. I am also replacing all the electrical boxes, relays, etc in the engine compartment while I am at it and also swapping over the 80 heater core, ac condensor, etc. The ones from my 79 had mouse turds, nests in them and made the car stink. Also ripping out the old carpet, cleaning it, and putting it back in. Its relatively new, but smells a bit.

Damn Mice they got some of the wires in my first RX (1985 GSL). They can sure make a mess. Did they get the intrior bad?

I had them in the head liner, under the lock boxes, and behind the glove box. The smell can be treated but the first humid day you will experience it all over again. Try using a pan filled with liquid Amonia, set it in the car and close the windows, roof and hatch up tight and let is sit for a couple of days the amonia will actually cut the stink and help neutralize it

Any way no wireing help, but I hope the mouse info helps

Good luck
