identify this model, "harder then expected"
ok guys... i know i know i know i know i know... This has been gone over again and again.. But i want you to all know that i did indeed search the shit out of this before i started this post. I seem to be running into some contradicting info. Ok here is the prob. I have my parts car 84 rx7 for sale in the for sale section of this site. And i advertised it as a gsl-se becasue i dont know a ton about these cars yet and it had a gsl-se badge on the back.... I really need to know what model this is!
I did check these things for refrence before hand. I first searched the faq section about identifying by vin and non of the links worked. I also found this thread..https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...identify+model where it said that if your vin has "all FB332 are GSL-SE, FB331 all others 12A" and i also found this.. on that thread. "easier way to tell is it has studs sticking out and using lug nuts instead of the GSL, S's lug bolts". I also found this thread which left me still confused too!! https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...identify+model Here is what i do know... its a 84 it has 4 wheel disc it does have lsd it had wheel studs and lugnuts NOT wheel bolts it has cloth interior it had a carbed 12a in it it has a gsl-se badge on it This is what the vin starts with.. The VIN indicates it started life as a GSL-SE. Someone must've swapped a 12A into it at some point.
Check if the rear discs are vented or solid. If they're vented, it still has the -SE rear end. |
I don't think that's an SE. While I'm not an expert on the S3, it looks like it has all the stock 12A running gear in the engine bay. I don't see anything to hint at the EFI 13B that came in the SE.

Its a GSLSE. The vin # says GSLSE , the idle mixture pot is on the pass strut tower, the rad support has a hole in it for air box duct. someone just swapped in a 12A .

Right side radiator support has the hole for the GSLSE intake. Bracket for the GSLSE air box is still in place on the right inner wheel well. Vin is probably not wrong. I'd say someone did a fairly thorough job of swapping in a 12A at some point. Looks like 12A wiring, charcoal canistor, only 3 fuseible links. Is there an oil cooler under the radiator? Was there an engine in the car when you got it?

Just a quick FYI on GSL-SE and non SE models from 84-5. On several occasions I have either put 12a setups (complete) into SE chassis or the other way around at the customer's request usually becuase they had one go bad and had a better setup in a crappier car. The chassis for the 84-5 is setup to accept either one all of the hole are predrilled and threaded as needed as are all of the brackets that are welded in place ie for the oil cooler. On most of the ones we did you wouldn't have been able to tell it was done except for the vin number and maybe the suspension.
But as many in this thread have said the vin doesn't lie, it started life as an SE |

The 12A kicks ass the 13B does too. I wouldn't call it a downgrade exactly. little less HP but they last longer on the higer revs from what i've read/been told.

id a checked the fuel tank and fuel lines 7/16 lines are on the SE.

As stated the VIN doesn't lie and it says it's a GSL SE model. I originally asked junkrx7 to confirm that this was a GSL SE car because I didn't know the VIN at the time and it had 12a components in it. ie, choke, fast idle etc. |

Vin numbers are located on the driver side door jamb and stamped into the firewall on the right side.

I think you missed my point. Who cares what the VIN says? Take a look at the attached pic, I just went outside with a flashlight, opened my SE, sat down and removed the defrost vent with VIN attached in literally 2 seconds...Will that vent only fit MY car? Couldn't I hypothetically just remove that vent and snap it into place in any fb? I'm not making ANY assumptions about the original poster's car, I've never looked at any of the pics. I just am pointing out that hypothetically the entire dashboard could've been swapped, or just the heater vent! Is there another VIN somewhere else on the car that would match the dashboard VIN? I would like to know as I am completely ignorant of if there are multiple VIN's and where they all are.
anyways.. this car is a gsl-se confirmed.. Now i just gotta figure out what model my 82 rx is lmao.. |
