i need help

my car starts but won't hold a idle, it revs all the way to red line. when i set the timing exactly where it's supposed to be the mis-fires but not when it's reved up. when i advace the timing it holds the idle a litle better and then when i rev it up it mis-fires. i don't know thats goin on. is my timing so far off or whats goin on? o the other thing, when i rev it up to like 4k and try to keep it there, when the timing is where it's supposed to be at, it'll rev up 500 then suddenly the engine cuts out and then it'll rev up again. and it does this no matter what rpm it's at. wtf is goin on?

it's an 84 gsl-se

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Have someone keep it revved and running while you spray carb cleaner all around the vac hoses. If the idle changes, there's your leak,
I had the same problem, it was a split in the top hose coming off the BAC. The split was on the bottom, impossible to see. Other than that, when was the tune-up stuff changed, plugs, wires, cap & rotor?
Also, here's a site that might help.
