Question I need help!!!

I just got my first Rx7. It has been sitting for two years and won't stay on. It ran like a champ until my cousin let it sit. I changed the oil plugs and rotor button. When I pull the choke it will start but as soon as I push it in or try to give it some gas it cuts off. What could it be?

The carb could possibly be gummed up from sitting so long.

I tried carb cleaner. Should I take the carb off to clean it?Also, do I need to try to replace the fuel filter?

Wouldn't hurt, since its a maintenance item anyhow.

My RX-2 had been sitting for 5 years, and I had to take the carb apart to clean all the buildup out of it.

I changed the oil plugs and rotor button.
???

No offense, but what the hell are you talking about LOL?

EDIT - I'm stupid... I thought you meant the "oil plugs" ... now I see the apostrophy was implied... gotcha

Did you let it fully warm up? If you just start it up cold after 2 years and hit the gas right away it won't like it so much. Does it still have old gas in it from 2 years ago?

I'm sure all kinds of things could have happened if it sat for 2 years without running....

I'd recommend that you fully check over everything on the car, after sitting so long. Maybe one of the vacuum hoses is brittle and cracked? Anything could be going on.

Personally, I would start with a clean slate; flush the rad and change all fluids and oil filter, air filter, probably replace rad hoses, replace spark plugs, wires and cap/rotor, replace fuel filter, replace old gas in the tank with new gas. Look over the engine bay carefully, especially for any cracked vacuum lines or other suspicious things.

Sounds like a lot, but I like to make sure all the simple stuff is good. Obviously not all of that has anything to do with your problem, just maintenance/peace of mind stuff. If you're gonna start driving the car it's a good idea.

Sorry I'm not a better help with some magic idea... it's not rocket science though... you make sure the car is getting good fuel to the carb, you make sure the engine is getting good spark. Then you worry about more complicated things like opening up the carb. It certainly may come to that though. These cars are not so complicated... there isn't that much to it, although the Nikki carb and emissions equipment combo is definitely quite intimidating for first timers.

First step, do you have a manual? Haynes manual is sufficient at a budget price.

I wish that I could let it fully warm up but it won't stay on. Most of the things that you mentioned (SilverRocket)I have already done. But I will have to admit that I did not replace the gas or rad. fluid or fuel filter yet. I was just tring to get the car to stay on for longer than five min. Luckily the hoses are fine vacum and otherwise. I just hope that I can get the baby going. I have always wanted this car.

Drain the gas first before messing with the carb.
