So this lady brings in a firstgen with a low compression engine, the master mechanic says that it is time for a new motor.... the lady responds "i dont want that car any more!" she lets it sit for a week and the mechanic calls her back telling her that he has a guy that will take it off her hands. or shes gonna get charged for it to get towed away, she says go for it he can have it. Now this is where it gets intresting. My friend Jhon gets it and the other mechanic tells him how to fix it, he says unplug the coil and get two corts of oil, Now while my friend jhon is cranking it over the mechanic pours the whole 2 and a half corts in it, then they keep turnig it over for about 15 mins. then they let it sit for 30 mins. after that they crank it for 15 more mins. hook the coils up and try and start it, the mechanic sprays carb cleaner in it then continue cranking, after that some more rest, (10mins) then a crank or two with out gas in it then floor it and the damn thing starts the mechanic then told him to put it at 3000 and let it sit for half hour. he did. then he shut it off and cooled it. and now after all that it drives fine and starts good EVERY TIME! it sounds just like mine and pulls all the way to 7000 and the SOB idols! doesnt that just sound like the wierdst thing ever! its true and i cannot belive it worked. the mechainc that did it is the worst one out of the bunch but he got it to run so i guess hes not that bad. sweet car and sweet story this one was actually cheaper than mine! 100 dollars this one was free! and its streetable! just thought i would let you guys know about this, i almost **** when i herd it!

I just bought an 85 and I 'think' its carbon locked.. I've tried putting fluid in there and all that stuff but I cant get the thing to turn.. It would probably help if I had someone else to help. I'm going to try for a couple more days before I drag it to that mechanic you were talking about. lol
watch what you do when you pour that oil in though, 2 quarts of oil is MORE than enough to completely hydro-lock your engine.... not a good thing....
chris - carbon locking means the engine won't even crank over on the starter.... is this your problem? or is the car just cranking and cranking and cranking and never firing?

Yeah.
**** that lady who owned it, right?
What a low down dirty way to get a nice car.
Why don't you do the rotary community a favor and let us know who the clown-mechanic is so's we can all steer clear of him?

I like to work an engine back and forth at the flywheel. That usually helps to free up a rotary engine.
The mechanic who worked on it probably never sees many rotary engines and old ones at that.
Not too many mechanics see a lot rotary engines. Let's face it. most the guys with old RX7's have no money to spend.
The first rotary engine that came through my shop, was the one I bought at the salvation army.
It's no excuse however to tell the lady she needed a motor. If he did not know he should have told her to seek other help.

Neat trick but that's definately shady business. Ill-gotten-booty at its' best.
I could not own a car under those circumstances.
Yeah- I thought it was ATF too?

Apparently Marvel Mystery Oil contains the same detergents (don't know what) as auto tranny fluid.
Really you're supposed to let it soak for 48 hours to let the oil work.
I've demonstrated my distain for this sort of advice, as you are really supposed to used just a capful per rotor face.
New rotary owners come on here (I'm gonna shoot a guess @ 80%) to find a solution to ill idle, poor running, or no start problems. If they are not familiar with the correct way and reasons behind this, 2 quarts is TOO MUCH, and WILL wreck catalytic converters.
There are two reasons to use oil like this...
One is to soak and decarbonize your engine, and the other is to increase compression thru sealing.
Niether one of those requires that much oil, and if you have a carb or ignition problem that is causing your no-start situation, you can exacerbate (my word of the day 'cause it rymes with **********) the problem.
The woman probably would've junked the car from what you say, so at least it lives. I didn't mean to jump on YOU, Tree, for the mechanic's poor ethics, just so's ya know.

Ok, so... say you put in a capful of fluid for rotor face 'A'... What if the opposite seal (the one between faces 'B' and 'C') is locked so badly that you can't turn the rotor at all? How would you get any fluid to it?
If I just start rocking the flywheel back and forth, is there a risk of breaking the seal?

rocking the flywheel back and forth is a decent way to get rid of carbon lock, but you DO risk breaking an apex seal by doing it.... if you want to eliminate the risk of carbon lock when using oil, just take the plugs out...
put some oil in the spark plug holes, and rock 'er back and forth gently (if possible) and hope that it breaks the carbon up into little enough pieces to expel out the exhaust...

after re-reading the post it seems as though there were two mechanics. and maybe not at the same shop(other=another). i got a 79' for $125 from the non-running section of a car auction. pushed it outside their property mmo'ed it came the next day started and drove 20mi. home.
no he didnt mean to do " scummy ethincs" it was fucked so he tried something and it worked, he didnt mean to **** her out of the car! best mechanic shop in town Cambells automotive.
the car was blown, ther was no compression so the owner said its time for a new engine, she said to hell with it and left it there, he called her and asked her what she wanted to do. she said do what ever you want so he said i have a guy here who will take it from you. she said yes so my frined got a (supposed blown motor) rx7 for free. so because it was free he was willing to try anything to get it running, the other mechanic at the shop said try this and did it for him, it worked and thats all, they didnt want to cheat them out of there car but it had low to no compression so as usual thats a blown motor! i hope you guys chage your mind on this shop its top notch, there ford people but they work on everything. any who they didnt cheat the car out of her.

I think it may have been a case of nieveness on the ladies part,... After all we live in a disposable society, and alot of people rather than try to learn whats wrong and fix the problem, just throw it away and get a new one.
Me on the other hand i like to take things apart, and love the challenge of figuring out the problem. usually it's not the cars fault, but mearly neglect.

if this friend of yours has any decency, he would take the car back to the old lady and tell her that they fixed it.
Stupid idiot mechanics like this give other mechanics bad reputation.
