How to removing front wheel bearings?

As the title suggests, how do I do it? I've rebuilt the calipers & ordered replacement rotors/discs on the 1984, but need to swap the bearings from the old disc to the new. The outer bearings seem to just pop out but how do I remove the inner? There seems to be a rubber seal on the inboard side of the rotor - does that come out and then the bearing is pushed from the direction of inside to outside or what? I don't have all the fancy tools but I'm sure it is achievable without resorting to a press?

Thanks

Dave

Yes, buy new grease seals. The old ones get pried out and they are junk after that.

yea get new seals, and yes you can do it with home tools, but it will take a while, you'll have to use a brass punch to hit the races out/in

I have used old seals, but yeah. It's a shitty thing to do... Like washing paper plates...

Actually, I'd get all new wheel bearings... but if you'd like to reuse the old ones, remove the grease seal and the bearing... You'll see the race in there... It's pressed in, but there should be grooves on the opposite side where you can use a hammer and punch (SOFT! use brass types if available.) to push it out. Push evenly. few taps on one side, few on the other... Back and forth...

Yeah,

The outer bearings are easily swappable, as I'm sure you've noticed. The Heynes says that the inner ones are gonna be junk when you pry them out, and I'm inclined to agree with them.

I'm getting new rotors next week. I have already removed and reinstalled the rotors that I have, so I know the outer bearings and seal are in good shape, the inner ones though.... it's gonna cost 50 bucks for the inner bearings alone.

Good luck

Jon

Well, armed with the confidence provided by others here on the board, I've taken out the bearings/races on the front rotors.
The inner race wasn't too bad to remove and after degreasing it for a while the grease seal has pulled away nicely so that the bearing can be cleaned up and repacked for re-use. New grease seal will be installed.
But the outer race! What a PIA! I never thought that the race would be that difficult to punch out considering it is 'profiled' as such inside the rotor. But done now so the jobs a goodun'...
New rotors arrived - man, what a difference in thickness from the old ones! I don't have a gauge to measure the old ones, but they seem to weigh about half the new ones so I'd say they were borderline deathtrap.
Now I've just got to get the races/bearings back in to the new rotors (any tips?) and get the baby back on the road.
Wish me luck with the completion of my first brake system overhaul!
