how much would you pay for a rebuilt shortblock?

im about to go look at a rebuild 12a for my car since mine is dead (i think)

no carb, intake, basically a short block. i dont care about the exhaust manifold since i have a header.

he says it has new rotor housings, and was rebuilt by atkins 19k miles ago. he wants $500 for it. good deal or should i talk him down some? i dont like low balling people because it makes me feel like an ***.

i also want to look at the motor first, but i dont have a way to test compression. im bringing a pen light to see if i can see all apex seals, and so on and so forth.

what do yall think?

$500 for a low miles rebuild with new housings seems like a good deal to me. atkins is pretty good at what they do.

yeah. thats a good deal. when you check out the engine get the ARS numbers off it. then call atkins and ask what was done to the engine. they stamp all the engines they build with their serial numbers. they can look it up on the comp. and tell you about it.
