how much is to much rpm

new to rotaries, do these engines react well to high rpm reving, such as consistant accel. to 6-7K or will this do harm?

thats what they do best...some guys reve them to like 9 grand and dont have any problems...if your engine in an 81 or newer rev like snot....if its <'81 keep it to the red line

naw, ive had mine up to 8000k+ on accident, and no harm done. most peple will tell you 8500 is the limit, then you start to bend the stationary gears and hit the housings.

plus, every now and then, redline will help clear carbon out which helps it out.

Theres a red line on the tach for a reason. On my '85 GS the N/A 12A pulls real nice until about 6500 with a redline covering the area between 7 and 8 thousand.

I hear that the engines can go safely up to 9000, but when the tach stops at 8000 and power falls off by 7000, theres really no need to try that out.

It's not that different from a piston engine. The red lines and danger marks on the guages work the same way.Don't let the car exceed those limits unless you are damn sure of what you're doing.

when i dyno'd my 12a with only exhaust, it was still making power when i shut it down at 7k. im not saying it makes power for ever, or even up to 8500, but i have had it up there on accident at autox's and there have been no probablys 5000 miles later

my son's GSL is an 84 12a automatic, and it seems the only way to get it to get up and go is to rev it out. does this seem normal or could there be another issue. This things seems like a dog when you accelerate normally, but when you crank the rpms it seems a lot zippier.

In any automatic there is a substantial loss of hp from the torque converter as much as 15 or 20% in some cases.

the plan is to swap in a 5 speed after he's figured out how to drive. Let's face it, kids have got enough to concentrate on when they start to drive, why add a clutch into the equation if you don't have too. Thanks for all the advice,

Rev on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's like riding a bike for the first time. I never had training wheels. I also learned how to drive a stick before I got my driver's liecense.

Teach him basic car driving skills in an empty parking lot. Clutch or no clutch, it won't really matter if he's just starting to learn to drive. Kids can learn a lot faster than we give them credit for (I feel old now).

the stock 12a can handle brief excursions to the 5 digit RPM zone with no problems... dont ask me how i know hehe 8500 is the generally accepted maximum safe RPM however.

yes, it stops your flywheel from busting into the car when it comes loose and cutting your legs off or sending shrapnel careening into your liver and spleen and nuts.

How does one determine where 8500/9000 rpm is when the tach in my '85 GS only makes it around to 8000rpm??

one can tell by the engine's pich and tone after the tach stops. i guess its really a guestimate. that or one has an aftermarket tach hooked up.

The one time I put my 83 in the red I lost a seal on the rear rotor.

Before I drive my new one hard I am getting a very bit tach with a 500W shift light.
