i priced it all out (actually have done it once or twice too), this is for a "stock" restoration, meaning you're pulling everything not body color off the body, repainting, replating, rebuilding, or resealing, or replacing everything. not just finding a decent car and making it run. i'm also assuming you're starting with a running car, no big rust holes or dents

paint ~ at least $3500
all the bearings, seals, gaskets, badges, trim bits etc etc ~ 3000 (you could save here, by buying non mazda stuff, but then it wouldnt be "correct", and used would take more time, and thus more money, and still wouldnt be a new)
plating, powder coat etc $1500
misc stuff ~ 1000, like cleaners, spray paints, grease, oils etc etc

it would be very hard to do an SA/FB for under 8k and have it turn out right. can it be done? yes, certainly

^^ sorry to break the chain of replies but are you sellin you car on ebay or is the white "initiald'' t2 not you?

to add on what i said above its so true that the money spends so fast that i dont even realize it. and my car hasnt been legit to drive yet either so its just been sittin on a driveway for almost half of its life. i look forward to seeing my car rebuilt the right way from top to bottom. so hopefully spendin 8-10 Gs into one car will be worth it and then much much much later i plan to pick up another 1G and make it into a track car.

I am amazed at how much some people have spent on this board. I feel that these cars are worth restoring. I myself have spent a total of $567 for my daily driver. I paid $400 for the car and the rest in replacement maint items. The car is an 84gs with 129 000kms. Passed safety and have been driving it everyday for the last month. The car needs paint though. That will be my biggest expence. I am lucky because there are 5 rxs at local wrecking yards around here.

hey, i did mine for cheap, and I think it turned out great- i just didn't replace EVERYTHING. The car sat for 5 years, but that doesn't mean you have to rebuild the entire thing from the ground up. You can, but what's the point if you're going to drive it? Sure, I could've just dropped $200 for new carpets, but I dyed them and made a new rear one by myself. If it can be restored, you don't need to buy it new, you just gotta spend a little more time on it, and be creative. and no, i didn't get everything under my car plated and powdercoated. It's not a "concourse" restoration, but it looks and drives very nice, and I get tons of compliments on it. And i don't think I would, or could, let it go, because I can't envision someone else owning it, not even another 7 enthusiast. It's mine. I ressurected it. I know it. Plus, if you know you're not going to sell it, you can do whatever you want to it, and not worry about the resale value.

here's some pictars:

"what the hell is this thing?" LOL

My last three FB's cost me, $250, $325 and $350 all ran and were driven home. One is becoming a race car, (read as mnoney pit) one was the winter beater due to rust, the last was the cheapest and is the cleanest, very nice 84 GSL, so far I have put in

Carter Fuel pump
Holley FPR
Mikuni
RB header
Exhaust
Tokico Illuminas
Stereo
Redline Leather shift boot and handbrake cover

Total cost is about 1/10th of a new Corolla, but with personality and charm.

She is coming along nicely.
