How many original owners?

Was reading the thread on how much people paid for their cars and was wondering how many 1st gen original owners there are here.

I bought my 1984 GSL-SE over 18 years ago ($16,500) when I was in my 30s and now I'm a retired geezer in my 50s and still have it with only 58K miles. Most of my co-workers and friends who once had sports cars transitioned to slab sided Buicks, minivans or GM products with fake wire wheels. Although I have had, and have, many other cars the SE is still a blast to drive. Now, I just have to get those aux. ports unstuck.

I would wager you're one of only a handful of original owners...the average age in this 1stgen Forum seems to be right around 25, so they obviously couldn't have bought any '79 -'85 rexs new! Young roosters...

How about 2nd Owner? I bought mine off a woman who owned it for 17 years. Yep, Lady driven, and 100% stock with NO Mods. Just the way I wanted it.

I'm the third owner but, mechanically, it's in great shape with very little rust. When I bought the car, I also received the original brochures, manuals, receipts and titles.

Im the 3rd owner, the car was rusted to **** but about a year of work on and off, it was done. The previous owner also raced it so the entire car was a bit abused... Still not too bad for $150!
Now you'd never guess it had been in that bad of shape. Pretty much everything has been fixed/replaced except for tranny and Diff.. BTW what happenes when LSD completly stops working? car will still move right?

It'll probably still move, but the clutches and inner workings of the LS will not work.

Directfreak,

It sounds like you must have bought that relatively recently. If I may ask, is it an SE and how much did you pay. The prices for used ones around here are pathetic and I think my mint 58K car is worth at most only $3000. Bad news and another reason to keep it.

Also, have kept the car totally stock.

I promised myself I NEVER BUY a lady driven car, that usually means never maintained and never fixed until it absolutely WOULD NOT go another inch. Well my 88 vert is a 2nd owner car, and Im the 2nd owner. She has EVERY maintenance record, and the oil was very very brown, and it drove serperb with maybe a new motor in it? (not sure) had a new top in 97. So I stole it from her last year for a measly 3300

Spent $100.00 for my '83 GS (rattle can chrome...Yuck!!!), and an '83 GSl parts car with running, low mile engine, rear disk, LSD, and all of the other bells an whistles. With the two cars I received four core motors, two more transmissions, and 17(yes,.. 17) dizzys with only one bad ignitor. Yes I am a happy man!

If only I could get my wife to understand WHY I brought home another pile of parts....

Another note.... It is still killing me to leave behind a (super) straight '79 to be crushed, but if I brought THAT home, I'd be finding another home

(Oh yes, according to DMV records, I am the 23'rd, and last owner of this car......

I bought it in January of this year. It is my 7th RX-7 although I haven't had one since 97, when I sold my previous SE. I paid $2500 hundred for an otherwise Mint GSL-SE with 165K on the clock. It needs a paint job (roof mostly) and that's it. It cost me an additional 300 to have it shipped to Miami.

I wanted an original, not modified car for my Project "Cosmo" Kramer.

I have more pictures if you click on my signature. Keep the car, it will be a classic in the future. I have a friend who thinks I will be "butchering" a perfect GSL-SE, but I wanted the best platform for a Turbo 1st Gen, so too bad..

Dfreak,

As far as "butchering", to each his own. I have kept mine stock but the aftermarket lets one do whatever they want.

Good luck on the "butchering" and let us know how it comes out.

BTW, nice pics and that looks like either Arizona or Cal.

Got you all beat.
Original owner, 1980 GS.
I now own:
80 GS
85 GSL-SE
86 base
90 Vert

I paid $9500 for my 80 brand new. Back then, they were getting more than list for the RX's because they were so popular.
I love my cars!!!

My 7 has always been in the family...

My uncle bought her new in 1982, a silver GS model. He drove her on weekends and only in nice weather, racking up a total of 65,000 kms in 14 years. Kept completely stock. When I turned 16 and got my driver's license, my uncle decided to pass on the glory... his official reason for giving her to me was he was getting too old (and large... haha) for such a small sportscar. Somehow my parents agreed to this. I don't know how he ever let her go, but lucky for me he did!

6 years and 60,000 kms later we are still spinning strong, albeit she packs a meaner punch now due to a few mods...

Oh, and check this out...when I was a little kid, my uncle used to come visit us in the 7 all the time. I thought it was the coolest car imagineable. 10 years later and it's mine! I've got pictures of me, 4 years old, sitting behind the wheel of the same RX-7 I drive today!

Man, thinking about all this makes me wanna be a little more careful with her...

I'm an original owner of a 1982 GX limited edition. I bought it in October of 1982 from the Mazda dealership in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
Since then I've been 'enhancing' the GX with all sorts of restyling. I have a Mariah Mode I wide body package as well as a 6-street ported 13B with a twin 44mm Mikuni carb setup. The interior has a full Home Theatre system wth dolby 5:1 DVD, Satellite Nav, CD, system with the latest security system in place that pages me with the alrams.
There's more but that's good for now.
I'll never get rid of my RX-7. I'm 44 now and will have it until the day I can't even drive. I'll just sit in it and day dream.

mar3,

It looks like your first response was correct in that there are not too many original owners here although it is nice to seen some. Probably for any car 15-20 years old there would not be many original owners.

Also, "hanman", I know what you mean about surcharges over list price. When my SE was purchased in 1984 the salesman said I was getting a good deal since I only paid list. Actually he was correct since the SEs were only recently out and most dealers were getting over list. That is the only car I have ever paid list for. One can even get discounts on Mercedes-Benzs depending on the model and the demand at the time.

This may seem hard to believe but I got $11,000 off of a 1988 MB 560SL which is my other 2-seater. It was purchased just after the severe stock market decline of October 1987 and I figured the time was right. It was and MBs were stacking up on the dealer's lots and demand was artificially depressed. The saleman said that I "just happened to be in the right spot at the right time". I never tried to explain it and let him think that I just happened to be a dumb, lucky yokel.

Here's another original owner. I bought my 83 Gs in January of 83. Other than changing color from Misty Blue to Tender Blue, it looks as new as did in the beginning.

Hey geezer, ohh I mean pmartin .....I have two 84 gsl-se's , one with 80,000 miles , the other with 93,000 miles and no, I am not the original owner. Like someone else said, I believe most 1g 7 owners are early twenties andmy guess is, they are cheap to buy, look good and are a lot of fun. And if you want to sell your gsl-se for 3G, I'll buy it!!. I personally think you could get more $$$ if you sold it unless there is something wrong with it. I recently sold a 84 gsl-se with 89,000 miles for $4200.00. leather , no sunroof,no p/s. I am not the original owner of any of my "7's" but I am old enough to have bought one (but too poor then)...I settled for a Ford Fiesta...nice little car for the time but now I can afford a gsl-se at $3000-4000. I wanted one back in 1984 but like I said, it was not practical for me then nor could I really afford it. Lets face it, these cars are toys...but fun toys for sure. I will always have my mint , original stock 84 gsl-se. I buy and sell some gsl-se's cause I love playing with them, learning things and becoming more and more knowledgeable about repairs and restoring .It is sooo much fun to me. I got off on a tangent....sorry...cjf

cjf,

You said you sold an 84 SE with no sunroof. I thought I recalled that sunroofs were standard on the SE so I checked the original window sticker for my car and confirmed that was the case. The line item for the sunroof lists it as "No charge". Are you sure yours was an SE or did they change the standard configuration at some point in time? My car was delivered in December, 1983.
