How long do 1st gens usually last?
It is probably a reman. From time to time when Mazda is short of cores, they do ship new engines instead of remans. (I can't remember what was the case in 87-88.) But it would seem odd for them to make "new" 12A engines if no vehicle in production at the time was using them. Why do you think it was new and not a reman?
Did anybody on here get a replacement engine in 87 and remember if it was new or reman?

The HB Luce and HB Cosmo had 12aTs until 1988.
Aha! I was wondering about that. Did they have low compression rotors? FWIW this spring we were getting new 13B (non-renesis) engines and it has been ~2 years since the last rx-7s were produced. I will check the date of manufacture of them.
1985 GS with 288,xxx+ miles on it. Minimal rust bubbling under paint in a few spots. Third engine; well, second really because the motor that was in it when my dad got it was, like, melted. Heh.
