Question How hard is it to get a title for an 82 RX7?

I found this:
http://adcache.collectorcartraderonl...2/77662122.htm

An 82 RX-7 that looks pretty good EXCEPT that the owner has no title for it.

Thus, assuming that the car is not stolen, how difficult would it be to get another title for this car? (I know nothing about these sort of things so any help is much obliged.)

Thanks
Gaz

Every state is different but usually you can get the previous owner to sign an affidavit declaring that they lost the title and are releasing all interest in the car to you. That and a bill of sale should be enough to re-title the car in your name. There is typically a lost title fee of some sort, but it's probably about $50 (better check first). Go to the DMV at which you plan to use and ask them. Take notes and write down the name of the person you spoke to. Might be good to politely ask to talk with a supervisor, just so their opinion has some clout if you return and find the next person claiming you did something wrong.

Another route is to have a professional shop or tow company do you a favor by filing a title lein, after which the title is re-issued to them...and they may then "sell" the car to you. Better make sure it's someone you trust, though. Junk yards can also get titles, but because they are not typically licensed to sell cars (only "junk"), the title may get branded "salvage".

It is in Fl do you really want to go there from Canada to get it?

You could tag it in GA with just a bill of sale. But being an 82 it still needs to pass emissions or be taged in a non emissions county. There are also title services that can get one for you if you live in certen states. Search my name, Title and in the Lounge and you will find the online services.

I find it hard to believe anyone puts a "brand new motor and transmission" into a shell they have no title for. I suppose it's possible, if one were building a racer, but titled shells can't be that hard to find in the first place.

Looks like you've already considered that it might be stolen. Stay cautious.

If you're in Canada leave it alone, especially if your province or district has emissions testing. Canada Customs does scrutinize cars coming into the country, especially if they have any questions about title and/ or liens. Since each state has different rules it's harder to track a car's history and they know this.

By the time you get that $500U.S. ($700 CAN.) car home it may have cost you well over a grand. There are plenty of better bargains to be had north of the 49th parallel in places like Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto.

Why is it parts only if it has a good body and runs strong. I say leave it. Find something closer to home and with a title.
