How good is the pre-fuel pump filter (GSL-SE)?

i will be upgrading my fuel pump to a bosch 044 unit and am wanting to know how well the pre-fuel pump filter is on the stock car (specifically on the GSL-SE model). do i need to go aftermarket and if so, what's a good filter on the lower end of the price range?

I'm running a 1/2" in/out carb filter between the tank and the pump. I picked it up from napa. there isn't any pressure at that point so you don't need an injector filter.

thanks guys. i'm using the stock filter right now but was just concerned w/ the 044 pump. when reading the aeromotive installation instructions, it said to use a 100 micron filter (specifically an aeromotive one as it provides 60" of surface area).

chris, do u know the part number? just want to do more research but i may stick w/ the stock filter as my tank has been cleaned.

I can't remember the parts number. I'd have to look under the car. I'll post the next time I get under there, should be in the next week.

I'm also running the stock filter as well.

The stock filter is after the pump. Stock has a screen in the tank that is no longer available. I installed the carb filter because I couldn't get a screen.

Look at the '85 fsm page 4B-3

never noticed that page actually. on 4B-55, there is a filter between the tank and pump, maybe that's the screen you are talking about. haven't been able to check under my car as it's still in paint. thanks for the info...maybe i will need to get a filter.

If you're talking about the cone that goes in the inlet of the fuel pump, it is lame and clogs quickly. I bought a big regular fuel filter with, I believe, 1/2" in/outlets. I stuck it before the fuel pump inlet and also bought a new outgoing fuel filter. This way, if there's garbage in the tank, the big filter can take it for a long time without clogging or reducing flow. It also protects the expensive SE fuel pump.

In fact, since I've got the tranny out, I'm going to replace both fuel filters (they're t least a year old) just in case. I carry spares as well.

Oh yeah, I recommend removing the cone filter.
