How do you know if you have an original engine?

Just curious if there are numbers somewhere that match up to the rest of the car, and where do I find them.

there is a number on the front steel approximatly under the alternator. the number does not match the car, and the only place you might be able to find if its original is by haveing the dealer run a warranty history, for the older cars though it can be incomplete.

The engine number is not linked to the body number on any record except where the local authorities required it for registration purposes or the dealer wrote it on the original sales document. Sometimes insurance companies require both numbers. If you can lay your hands on 20 year old documents you may be lucky, but on the vehicle itself, no.

The number does match the car I know this cause Japanese manufacturers have done it for years, and toyota still does. But its written on the VCC sheet when the car was made, the only ones that got a copy of it was the dealer. They got it with the shipping invoice for the car. The VCC sheet contains, body number, VIN #, air bag #'s, engine number, trans number etc.
