How do you disconnect parking brake cable...

... From the back of the brake backing plate? I'm trying to remove the rear end from my 79 SA and I took the clip off and moved the dust boot back as you can see, but it just twists back and forth.

Anyone know how to remove it so I can remove the rear end for refurbishment? This is part of my "79 barn find" thread. I appreciate any and all help! Nothing in my FSM or other books or a search on here gave me the answer I was looking for.

Thanks everyone!!

Updates on the build thread soon.

You need to detach the ebrake cable from the brake shoe arm then pull the cable from backing plate

Excellent, thanks Siraniko! I did that. The cable (as I'm sure you know), goes through a spring inside the drum and has a metal stop on the end that keeps the spring on. I guess I have to remove that metal stop somehow? Do you know how that comes off without damaging the cable?

Its easier to remove the shoe first then deal with the cable using a long nose plier or similar to retract tne cable spring. Also a C clip secures the cabke to the backing plate

Yep, sure enough, it came right out. There's a slot machined into the cylinder e-brake "cableway" on the back of the backing plate. I took a small screwdriver and cleaned out a bunch of gunk from the slot and then the cable and spring came out the back of the backing plate through that cableway. Did not have to remove the spring from the cable. I think the cable was installed into the backing plate with RTV to seal it into the backing plate. Once that broke loose it came out easily.

Thanks Siraniko for your help!
